Dave - General of the :unamused: army - I made something for you...
an unamused 'contact card'! (obviously it has all the info, but I edited out the private bits to show to OT) In my abundant time away from employment, I decided to wanted to learn how to letterpress print, so I found a shop nearby and asked if I could intern. I've been there a few days a week for about two and half months and having an awesome time. We make some really fun stuff. I wanted to do a fun project of my own and I figured this would be a nice way to say 'thank you' to Dave for supplying all of us with the greatest smilie ever conceived. (can you tell I'm slightly obsessed?) How is this thing of beauty made you ask? Well, I just happened to document the process in order to show everyone. It all starts with a design - you send an eps file to a company that makes polymer plates for use on the press. Traditionally, letterpress is done with movable lead type, but the polymer plate technology gives you a way to press just about anything you want. You get the plates back (one for each color that is run) and start planning how you need to cut the paper to run on the press, as well as figuring out what type of paper you want to run. I decided to run the yellow first because the black will look better run over the yellow instead of the other way around. You can see that the rollers are all inked up with yellow ink. Make a few test runs to get the desired impression and to line up everything just right. The adjusting takes a while and it needs to be just right, especially if you're running multiple colors.

View of the Vandercook Press. You can see where the paper is fed into the press along the guides.
A stack of one run of many, many to come... Now that the first run with the yellow is done, its time to clean the ink off the press and line up the next plate to run. Run it a few times without ink to get the alignment correct and to do the major adjustments... Ink the press up and run a few to get the minute adjustments and alignment just right...looking good! The face uses a decent amount of ink and the paper is thirsty, so to keep the color consistent, I needed to add ink a few times during the run... Grabbing the paper after I roll it over the plate Check each one after it comes off the press. This one looks good! I also look damn fine in an apron if I do say so myself. More ink... Little guy all inked up |

w00t! it's coming together...finally
The roller grabs the paper to travel over the plate. In this photo I've already run this sheet over the press once to get the black on there. Now the paper has been turned around and is run a second time. Gotta maximize paper usage! Sharp! Cleaning the ink off the press takes about 20 minutes every time. And it needs to be done between each color. All the ink must be cleaned off of all the rollers, etc. Not the most fun. Dave's info plate that will be run on the backside of the cards... Aligning again! (four times for this project!) Mixing the ink for the title for the last run... Lined up the title, time to run it! Press is inked up and running... |

Pink title looks sharp.
and of course, once they are all printed, they all need to get cut. Each sheet takes 3 cuts. First one, complete! Phew! So that's letterpress printing in a nutshell. Well... this particular project anyway. I printed a bunch just one sided as well. It's a ton of fun and I hope to do a few more projects. Who knows, perhaps I'll make this an occupation. |

Nice work!
Letter presses are very time consuming but the end product if very clean and has a more had crafted feel to it. I Interned at a place that had a couple of those floating around. They did prints of paintings. Every job had to be color perfect and took forever to get the prints done, but it was good fun. |

That's some quality work right there, Matt. And you sound more enthused in this single thread than you ever did about agency/office work. I think that's telling you something.
I love seeing the old-style printing process broken down. There's something very appealing about a non-digital medium like this. |
