Default Spy Shot Audi's New A5 SportBack/Five Door Coupe

First pictures of Audi's stunning new five-door coupe

Quote:
Feast your eyes on the A5 Sportback! Audi’s aim is to fill every possible niche in its range by 2015 and this is the next model in its line-up. Despite the trademark disguise, this prototype version was exposed briefly and our eagle-eye spies were on hand to capture it.

From the picture we can see the A5 Sportback will feature a high waistline and low, sloping roof, while the front should remain identical to the current A5 Coupe it is based on.

It is also clear it will have five doors but the sporty, raked, hatchback rear-end will ensure it looks much sleeker than an Avant. The coupe-hatchback will have a more spacious cabin than the standard A5 too which will help the new Audi stand in a niche all of its own.

Expect the same engines as in the A5 line-up, with base models remaining front-wheel-driven. All-wheel-drive will be available on the range-toppers though. The A5 Sportback is set to be launched in the second half of 2009.

Default Audi A5 Sportback caught almost undisguised

Quote:
Although it is not absolutely known why the five-door Audi A5 Sportback is at the University of California San Diego, a series of images of the car have been posted by students on the Net. Basing from the images, it is speculated that the spotted car will come with higher specs since it is equipped with the A5 Coupe’s five spoke alloy wheels. The carmaker itself had only released a teaser image and artist’s rendition of the vehicle. The front section of the vehicle has been masked but for the first time the rear section can be clearly observed. It looks like the front and rear sections have a resemblance to the A5 coupe and the middle section is extended for the two rear doors that come without frames. The A5 Sportback has a profile of a coupe with a lower roofline in contrast to the A4 and a tapering hatch into the clear air spoiler at the back.

It is claimed by Audi that in spite of this the car will still have enough head and legroom. It is clear that the C-pillar of the Sportback is distinct from the coupe with a striking twist at the rear. The Sportback will be joining the coupe and cabrio A5 lineup, and will be placed above the A4 range of cars upon which it is patterned. The A5 Sportback entry-level model will be powered by a 2.0 TDI powerplant that has 168hp, and priced at about $44,000. Available also is a 3.0L V6 TDI that comes with 237bhp, the 2.7 TDI that produces 187bhp, and two gasoline powerplants, the 2.0 TFSI with 208bhp and the 3.2 V6 that can generate 261bhp. All of these powerplants come with direct injection technology.
There are signs that Audi will be offering a less expensive model which will likely be powered by a 2.0 TDI that produces 141bhp that will join the range next year. Another possibility would be an RS5 variant with an enhanced version of the 4.2L V8 engine of the RS4, retuned to produce a higher power output and lower carbon dioxide emissions. It is thought that this model will utilize a quattro drivetrain with the double-clutch S Tronic transmission from Audi. This is the first time that an Audi RS vehicle comes with a double-clutch feature. This coming September the Audi A5 Sportback is expected to be officially showcased for the first time at the Frankfurt motor show, if not this July at the Audi Centenary Celebration. The car will be offered for sale this coming October in the markets of the UK.

Automotive enthusiasts must revel in the modern age of citizen journalists, though we guess professional spy photogs and car companies may not be as enthused. Take for instance the once-easy process of a photo shoot of a car not yet revealed… like the Audi A5 Sportback. While such a process may once have been easy, getting that footage or those glamour shots now, and on a busy campus like the University of California San Diego, without getting caught by any infinite number of student iPhone or Blackberry cameras is a virtual impossibility. In this case, two particularly aware students did a little more than a double take.

The first student, and the more close-up experience goes by the username Zamafir on Autoblog. You likely saw the under-cover shots of his as well as his written experience on that site yesterday. An admitted Audi enthusiast, Zamafir was kind enough to give this more Audi-focused website a slightly higher level of detail.

Leaving the parking office, I spotted an object which immediately sent a shiver down my spine, raised all the hairs on the back of my neck, and brought my pulse up to an unhealthy level - an Audi, A5 Sportback, shrouded in heavy camouflage. Yes, if you are certifiably 100% a car nut and 100% an Audi Fan Boy as I am, you’d have instantly recognized an unrevealed car with a profile no one has ever seen, shrouded in heavy fabric.

I immediately walked up to the gentleman in the driver’s seat and asked if I could take a picture of the car. The right side was completely uncovered, it’s silver body panels shining in the morning sun. Visibly uncomfortable, he declined my request. As much as I’d love to be the first to post complete production shot of the car, I also value the jobs of those in the industry and related fields and respected his request not to shoot the car.

Staring at the car, iPhone respectfully pocketed, I couldn’t help by marvel at just how well Audi pulled off a competitor to the 5 series GT. It’s an interesting design, an amalgamation of an A4 and the A5’s sloping rear behind the C-pillar, but a bit more substantial to help provide greater head room in the back. The rear light cluster is more elegant than either the A4 Avant or A5, though the entirety of the rear is what really strikes you. I’m a big fan of the BMW 5 series GT, one of the few I think, and the A5 Sportback manages to provide a similar sort of rear (in respect to the cars which sire it) while looking substantially more modern and more intentionally penned. It really does look nicer than the A4 or A5, and I love the A5 coupe. The rear window especially has an almost Aston-like line to it.

After admiring the side and front for a while I continued to talk to the car’s chaperone - a fellow car nut and all-round good guy in general. We traded stories about driving various entertaining cars, the R8, IS-F, etc. He mentioned he’d recently had the chance to give the R8 V10 Spyder a good flogging and couldn’t stop grinning about that. He was pretty impressed about the amount I knew about the car. I proffered the release date, pricing and what competitors it was aimed at. At this point he asked I I’d like to look inside, stoked, I ducked my head in.

“No, really, sit”

Who am I to resist the chance to sit in a car which hasn’t even debuted? Inside the car is very familiar, the dash pretty much the standard A5/A4 affair, as to be expected, but the seating in back is what surprised me. The roof slopes back towards the integrated spoiler with a fairly steep rake, yet the downward slide begins in earnest right where your head sits. The result is a very attractive outward profile and substantially more room in the back than the A5. In fact, the headliner even makes a slight rise to accommodate more headroom. One other bit of interest in the interior is the metal trim used, almost a perforated aluminum, something I’d not seen before in an Audi.

I’m very excited for this car, simply because it provides a more sporting, even more attractive option for buyers looking for something with the versatility of a hatch, but comfort and style as well. At the Q5 driving experience I became smitten with Audi’s CUV and appreciated many of it’s unique details which helped it achieve a bar higher than the A4 Avant in terms of the overall impression it gives. The A5 Sportback makes the same upwardly mobile stride. It provides a more modern, crisp antithesis to the taller Q5 or the A4 Avant. It is sportier – the A5 design language an inspired alterative to the A4 Avant. It’s simply gorgeous from the outside, as mentioned, the design of the C-pillar, the way in which it tapers into the trunk, the width and heft of the overall design, replete with many sinew creases. It all goes a great deal towards masking the car’s actual size and is a definite one-up compared to the 5 series GT.

While the interior isn’t remarkably new up front, and certainly not a revolution in design as the 5 series GT is to the 5 series, it’s not meant to be. The A7 will take care of that. For those looking for something even more beautiful than the A4 or even the A5, and with all the versatility of the Q5, the Audi A5 Sportback will most certainly bring your enthusiasm to a boil. I cannot wait for the A5 Sportback driving experience. I simply can’t stop gushing about how well the proportions work in person.

BMW should be concerned. The Audi A5 and A7 sandwich is going to leave little sales in the middle for the 5 series GT.

From the accounts we’ve heard, the shoot and the A5 Sportback stayed on location for a few hours. While there, another student also spotted the car and shot some images of the Sportback unmasked. Most of the images were shot through glass though and are slightly obscured.

Intel thus far on the A5 Sportback points to a car that is likely only for the European market, though Audi hasn’t ruled out North American sales if demand warrants.

High-placed sources say the Sportback will share drivetrain and packaging options with the A5 and S5. So yes, there will be a 3.0T-powered S5 Sportback even though the car shown here is clearly an A5.

Another source told us months ago that an RS 5 Sportback was not planned in the mould of the box-fendered 4.2-liter V8 RS 5. Later rumors in the press suggested a Porsche-developed 3.0T RS 5 was in order for the Sportback, but we have reason to believe, based on our own discussions with Audi representatives, that this idea of a Porsche-spawned RS 5 Sportback was just a rumor.

As of right now, the first expected Auto Show debut of the A5 Sportback is expected to be Frankfurt in September. We have very good reason to believe though that the A5 Sportback will also debut at Audi’s centenary celebration in mid July and that likely explains why Audi is knocking out footage of the car now.

As for the UCSD students, they’re eager to see if the car returns today for further on-site work. We’re told the point of the shoot was to get the car in front of UCSD’s new music building. Perhaps the crew and the car will return. We’d love to see more and bet there are many who’d agree.

I just don't see the attraction to these things. I really like wagons and hatches, but the new swoopy back hatches aren't doing it for me. This A5, the A7, the BMW X6, the Mitsu RA all have the same roof line and I just don't find them attractive. I must be in the minority.
