Thumbs up Brullen 2.5" Stainless Cat-Back

I already posted this in the Legacy forum; here is a compilation of those posts:

2.5 Stainless Steel Brullen Cat-Back for ’01 Legacy sedan in the quiet version with resonator. The install took about three hours, two in daylight, one in the dark. Fitting it up wasn't too bad, the problem was working in low light, it took longer to get the old exhaust off then to get the new one on, even though the car only has 7k on it, the bolts were rusting already. The overall quality of the Brullen is excellent, the fit was good, but not perfect, the right rear hanger seemed about ½” forward from where is should be, but overall as close to a factory looking fit as one can expect.

Okay, so how quiet is the ultra quiet version with resonator? I would not call it quiet, but it is not that loud either, it still makes you think, “What the hell does the loud one sound like!” The sound is low and mellow and starts becoming more audible at around 1700 rpm and is noticeable under load, but not at idle. I do like the sound a lot, the rumble it makes for the split second before idle drops when the car is started sends chills up your spine. I would have liked it even quieter, but overall I am very pleased and besides this is among the last elements in preparation for a turbo install this summer. With the turbo the sound should be right where I want it.

Brullen included stainless steel nuts and bolts all around, though too extra washers would have been nice on the rear, the bolts are starting to pull through the holes on the side without washers. I ran out to Sears hardware last night and picked up some more stainless hardware. Will fix that tomorrow.

The sound is great, though it lost some of its appeal after a 1 1/2 hour trip today, thought I was in a single prop plane toward the end there cruising with the radio off. Which isn't too far off given that people drop these engines into their airplanes with some frequency. I now know what a boxer really sounds like. I am hoping that adding the turbo should bring the sound down to were it is barely noticeable cruising at speed, but still has the nice tones when accelerating. I believe this would be less of an issue with the 2.25 piping and/or dual 3” tips instead of the single 4” tip but I was leaning toward the B4 look. Overall I would say the quality of the Brullen is as good if not better than anything else I have seen for our cars. I very solid exhaust that looks like it will outlast the car.

I have not resent the ECU yet, nor have I run any Gtec times, but will when I get a chance. My 3300 lb Legacy would run 17.1 - 17.3 stock, nothing impressive, but honest numbers without over-extending my baby. I am not going to beat on a 6 month old car, part of the reason I am going forced induction is I want a faster car without having to shift like a mad man.
