Clarification regarding JDM STi V8 take-offs
To all the suspension gurus out there, I need a little help clarifying some things about the JDM STi V8 take-offs. First, I did search and was unable to find a clear answer. So without further adeau...
As far as I know, there are several versions of the V8's. There's the regular V8's, then there's the V8 Spec C's, and also the V8 RA's. Now I've been told that that the RAs are basically the same thing as the Spec Cs, but I'm not sure. Also, according the ravensblade website, it seems that in order of spring rates (softest to stiffest) are as follows: V8 < Type RA < Spec C Is that right? What about the drops in ride height, if any? What are all the different types of V8's and how are they different? Are the 3 I mentioned the only ones, or are there more? I'm so confused Thanks for all the input in advance! Justin PS - In case you missed it the first, and before I get flamed for not searching...I DID search but was UNABLE to find a CLEAR answer.

There is no Version 8 Type RA. The JDM STi comes with two suspension setups. Both use the same struts. It appears that the only difference between a Version 8 STi and a Version 8 STi Spec-C are the front springs. I believe the Spec-C front springs have a slightly shorter ride height and a slightly stiffer rate. Some of the Spec-C take-offs are actually identical to the standard STi. The reason for this seems to be that there are two types of Spec-C, the road car (17" alloy wheels) and the rally conversion car (16" steel wheels). The way to distinguish between standard STi take-offs and the Spec-C take-offs are the paint codes (dots) on the springs. The standard STi has two purple dots on the front springs (the same as the USDM STi). The Spec-C has a green dot and a blue dot on the front springs. Both setups have two green dots on the rear springs. Ride height is between .5" (standard STi) to .75" (Spec-C front) below the stock WRX.

Thanks for clarifying that! Much appreciated. So to review: The only difference between the V8's and the V8 Spec C's is that the Spec C sits lower in the front and has a higher spring rate. Right?
Also, it has come to my understanding that the stock USDM STi uses the equivalent of the JDM V8 Spec C's. Is that what you meant by "Some of the Spec-C take-offs are actually identical to the standard STi"? Lastly, can anyone confirm the spring rates that I posted? Thanks again. |

Clear as mud!!!
Here is the information I have gathered on the Version 8 take-offs:
USDM STi: Front spring - 2 purple dots - spring rate = 200 lb/in linear Rear spring - 2 green dots - spring rate = 130-200 lb/in two stage progressive JDM STi: Front spring - 2 purple dots - spring rate = 200 lb/in linear Rear spring - 2 green dots - spring rate = 130-200 lb/in two stage progressive JDM Spec-C: Front spring - 1 blue dot, 1 green dot - spring rate = ??? Rear spring - 2 green dots - spring rate = 130-200 lb/in two stage progressive All three use the exact same struts and top hats. The spring rates I listed came from a strut dyno. I don't know of anyone that has tested the front spring on the Spec-C, though. Where it becomes muddled is that there are two versions of the Spec-C, the road car and the rally conversion car. It appears that one version uses the standard STi spring on the front, probably the rally conversion car, and the other uses the unique Spec-C spring, probably the road car. If you are buying a set of Spec-C suspension (usually more expensive) make sure it is the set with the unique paint codes. Otherwise, you could just buy a set of USDM STi take-offs and have what comes on the standard STi and *SOME* of the Spec-C cars. There are also other differences in the suspension geometry and bushings between the STi and the Spec-C. It appears that the USDM STi uses all of the same underpinnings and geometry as the Spec-C, but uses the standard STi front springs. So, yes, the USDM uses the exact same parts as *SOME* of the Spec-C cars, springs included. I have been researching this for a while now, and still get confused. |

Thanks strohk, your input has been invaluable. I'm like you, the more I learn it seems the more I get confused. Too much to know for my feeble brain.

Sorry for bumping old thread.
What is STI V8 spring rate? More I search more I get confused as I see spring rate from 18x to 2xx. Also, is it true that STI SPEC C V8 is same as 04 USDM STI spring? |
