2012 Impreza-USB Flash Memory Compatibility
Have you used a USB flash drive to play music? Post your experience here. Please post the drive info (brand, model, size) and the results. Any size drive is fine to post about, but I'm ESPECIALLY INTERESTED IN LARGER DRIVES (32GB, 64GB). Edit: if using a larger drive, please indicate how full it is, approximately.

I just used an old 1gb and it works good if you make sure to burn music as WMA files.
Note that on the Limited (and Sport Limited) HD radio you can't change sound settings while you're moving but oddly enough it let's you scroll through albums on your thumb drive... |

32 GB Cruzer, working fine here. Anything adhering to the USB storage standard should work.

About 24 GB, and yes finding music can be a pain. I just use the D>RDM mode to skip around the collection until I get close.

I listen to my USB "thumb" drives for probably 90% of my driving. I just copied files off CDs, iTunes folders, etc.
I have noticed some file formats won't play but I can't figure out what they are. The head unit just skips ahead to the next readable format. |

I'll add to the mix here:
Problems using the Patriot 32GB Flex drive (by me) and Patriot 32GB Axle drive (by another forum user). Symptom: will freeze playing during a song occasionally, maybe every fifth usage or so. For me, seems to happen only during the first or second song, so if you make it to the third song, you're probably good for the rest of your trip. I've tried a bunch of things I won't mention here, can assume that there is some incompatibility between the memory controller in the drive and the head unit. So now you know why I started this thread. Thanks for the feedback on the 32GB drive, Commander Keen. |

Are you using the FAT32 file system?

Will your thumb drive play through a laptop-style unpowered hub?

Drive works fine on my PC and Mac, and *usually* works in my car. If I can just buy another brand that works, I'm fine with that. Would you mind telling me which model of 32GB Sandisk drive you have? There are several. Thanks for your troubleshooting efforts. I appreciate it. |

Is the FAT32 partition the only one? I've found that the head unit can be confused by extra partitions.
Does it trip up on the same files? If so, are the problem files of the same type? The drive is a SDCZ36-032G Last edited by Commander Keen; 06-11-2012 at 02:32 PM. |

FYI on my Patriot drive situation: - Default single FAT32 partition as it was shipped - Folder depth: 4 (root/artist name/album name/song name) - Maximum number of files I tried filled to capacity: about 1775 (I also tried it filled to 23.9GB and 15.9 GB) - Most songs are 320 AAC encoded (simple encoding, no vbr, etc), some are mp3 at varying bitrates. If it hangs on a song, I can reset the stereo, go back to the song, and play it fine. - Also tried truncating file names to 18 characters, as my Type B stereo only displays the first 12 characters anyway. - I usually play in disk random mode. The location of the song files when it hangs is anywhere on the drive: one of the first, or middle, or last. I also have a Patriot XT 16GB (PEF16GUSB) drive, and the same song files play fine. |

You should be able to use it through the aux port. It won't be controllable with the buttons on your stereo or steering wheel, I don't think, but it will play. You'd have the benefit of being able to play Apple Lossless files (higher quality than mp3/aac).

Not sure if it applies with the Subarus USD memory but have found my bikes Zumo GPS doesn't like the memory card to be fragmented, ie it works fine formatted and everything copied over in one go or at least only add new songs to it without deleting old ones but if you delete old songs then copy in new ones it only partially plays songs then skips to the next track.

I got this drive as you suggested and it's worked great for the last three days, with plenty of car starts to test it. I'll post an update if it starts to act up, but so far has been flawless. I have it filled to capacity.
This drive is fairly slow to save to, but that's OK. I don't plan on updating it much. Slow old technology = maximum compatibility. Thanks for the tip. |

It's hard for me to replicate the variables for it to freeze, it does seem to freeze less if I don't turn on shuffle. So there is no solution for the Patriot 32GB Axle drive? I just bought it too, solely for the purpose of storing mp3s in my car with it. While we're on the topic of mp3 tracks and the head unit, is there a way to make the mp3 titles scroll (like it does for radio stations) so that way it can display more than 18 characters. Glad to hear it works, Tom. Like you said, the relatively slow write isn't a big deal.

I purchased a 32GB Emtec C600 and I am having this problem in my '12 WRX with the standard stereo. I only have a few hundred songs on it, totaling 3-4GB. My 2GB thumb drive had no issues at all, but I can't remember the manufacturer (might've been off-brand).
I've noticed that when I first turn on the car, it happens very frequently. As I drive, it becomes less problematic. Cycling through USB and radio modes doesn't do anything for me; I either need to wait about a minute for it to reboot itself, or pull the drive out and put it back in. If it reboots itself, it starts from the first song on the drive. If I pull it out and re-insert it, it actually resumes from the point it became stuck. |
