Default CEL problems help (searched already)

Here's the situation, i had a constant CEL for a day, then it went away. It's been about a week and now I have a constatnly blinking CEL as soon as I start the car. The engine feels like it is idleing roughly, but the rpm gauge looks pretty normal. My friend has a 97 GT and was able to pull codes off his car by plugging in 2 harnesses. I looked under the dash but didn't see anything like that there. I did a search and I "think" the only way to pull the codes is to use a scan tool. Am I right? I had the Cobb CAI on for about 5 months now and it never had this problem. The stock intake is back on but I am still getting the blinking. I did hit a deer a while back but i don't really "see" anything out of the ordinary under the car. Just wondering if anybody has any insight on this. Thanks.
BTW, i had called the dealer about the possibilty of there being a recall on my O2 sensor, but when they checked the VIN to my car, they said there was no recall for my O2 sensor.

the only way to pull the codes is with an OBD-II scanner, and it sounds like you have a misfire code stored. I reccomend taking it to the dealer.

STOP DRIVING!!!!!!

when the check engine light blinks, it usually means a misfire with lack of spark, wich means you are dumping raw fuel into the cats....catalytic converter failur is imenent, thats why the light flashes! so you know to stop driving, says it in the owners manual.

if the car is still under warranty have it towed to the dealer.

I started the car, noticed the blinking lights and never moved. I remeber reading that a blinking light was bad but i couldn't remeber if that was for the wrx's only or not. The service center doesn't open till monday so i won't be able to bring it in thill then. I started the car a few times and it never seemed stable enought to drive. I'll have it towed in on monday. Just wondering if that deer was the cause of this or something else...

well on a SFI system if the hole is dead it will typicall shut the injector down purposely to prevent the cats from overheating and melting down. these are MPI systems.

Did this happen all of a sudden?
Or were you messing with wiring under the dash?
My buddy saw two green connectors one day when we were installing some gauges and connected them... blinking CEL.
He thought he had unplugged them when he installed the alarm and forgot to reconnect.... nope.

Didn't mess with anything under the dash. I will be taking it to the dealer today. It should be safe to drive it there, the dealer is less than 2 miles from my house. That shoud'nt be a problem should it?

A few weeks after I bought my car I had a blinking check engine light. Came on when I shifted into 4th gear. It blinked 4 or 5 times and turned off. Never came back on. Had the code pulled and it had no stored codes. If it is constantly blinking and not running correctly I would have it towed. See if your insurance has towing coverage.

The car has been towed to the dealer. I still had the roadside assistance that subaru provides so i used it...
The 2nd to last time i started the car, there was sparking from one of the plugs. IT was not doing that before. I cleaned off the plug and the connection and made sure it was tghtly plugged in. No more blinking CEL but it is still on. They haven't had a chance to look at it yet but will do it today. I'll let you know what is going on.

I've been having similar problems. Engine was misfiring and I believe the CEL was flashing so I drove it the remaining 3 blocks to the dealer. I think that may have screwed up my catalytic converter, but I'm not sure of the initial problem causing misfire- don't want it to return.
