USDM ECU in a Canadian car?
It’s been a long road but I am having to replace the ECU in my 08 Impreza NA. Subaru quoted ridiculous money for a new one and programming.
So I’ve gone the route of buying an identical ECU of eBay and have sent both off to be cloned, however the new one is off a USDM car and I have a Canadian car. The guy cloning doesn’t think there will be an issue and I’m hopeful as well. Every number on the units match. I’m just worried about metric/imperial units for instance. Does anybody know if I’ll have a problem? Cheers!

I wouldn't think so.
In Subaru tech training we were always told "these cars were designed in metric" "work in metric, use metric measurement tools". Internal programming as far as the ECM should all me based on metric values. If I recall anything customer facing (instrument clusters/gauges) is converted within the logic circuits within the device. I know all diagnostic systems could be chosen to display values in metric/imperial - but that option was native to the software not the ECM. |

My concern would be the immobilizer,
I don't know what you mane by "cloning and ECU" if that means moving a tune over then you may have to still do a security programming, If that somehow means moving EVERYTHING then you might not have a problem. I cant recall if the 08 has a BIU with the immobilizer, or if its in the ECU, if its in the BIU then you'll probably be ok. You may have to have subaru do a key programming to get everything to run. |

Hi Elbert you were correct, no issues. Car is running great and starts right up!
Sidewaysobs im not sure exactly but I think they just take the key and vin information stored on one ecm and write it to another. I just wasn't sure if an ecm bought used from America would work in my car in Canada. I know it's not the tune. The car ran a little weird at first but after a few drives it's running awesome! Suspect the battery not being charged up after sitting for months contributed. |

This guy did a great job, totally worth it. Subaru can shove their 2k quote my ecm was 55 bucks and the clone cost $220 but it’s $175 for the states with free return shipping. I payed more for Canada shipping. My car acted like it was the same computer. Good deal.
