Pope Concerned
Pope Benedict XVI expressed concern over the Harry Potter books.
According to a German writer, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger wrote a letter in March 2003 expressing his concern that the books "erode Christianity in the soul" of young people. The comments came in an exchange of letters with a Roman Catholic sociologist who wrote a book criticizing Rowling's popular Harry Potter series. The sociologist argued that the Potter novels blur the boundaries between good and evil, and impair young readers' ability to distinguish between the two. The Vatican had no comment. The pope and his secretary are away on vacation. from here... http://www.click2houston.com/enterta...97/detail.html erode christianity in the soul... classic...

Though I do not necessarily agree with the Pope and how high of regard he is held in the Catholic community, I do see what he is trying to say with his statement. And I hope we all know that The Bible is not the Pope's book.
If you were to strip down the books/movies to its simplest form, you can see that the themes revolves around witchcraft (aka sorcery, wizards, magic, etc). These practices are pagan in nature and are in direct conflict with God and His teachings. Most children do not see the inherent danger (since it's so cool to read/watch) and thus go around dressing like the characters, trying to cast spells, and thinking that it's ok to be a witch/sorcerer. And the funny thing is that our society really does think this is ok, as long as you don't offend them or their space. You can be an evil pagan and worship other gods, just don't bother me. So do I agree with the Pope and think that Harry Potter is evil? I own LOTR/Matrix/Star Wars films so obviously not. Do I see what he means by the erosion of Christianity in young people? Yes. I think Christian parents need to be responsible and make it abundantly clear that Harry Potter is not real and neither are the other characters. Also that the subject of witchcraft, no matter how fantastic, is not something to be taken lightly. Young people are probably mature enough to see the difference but young children do not see what a fine line fantasy films tread, so I think it's up to us to show them and make them aware. I don't even know why I felt compelled to post this, maybe it's that I am now a father and so I feel like I have to be a good example for my son (not to say that other fathers on this board are not). He'll probably end up watching LOTR and Star Wars/Matrix/etc., but only when I feel that he knows the difference between reality and fantasy, which will be my responsibility. Until then, it's Veggie Tales and the Great Pie War. Even that I'll have to explain! BTW, t3h fL@m3$uiT 1$ 0nz0rs$$!!1 Last edited by APSWRX1; 07-16-2005 at 01:15 AM. |

nah APS I agree. I was helping out at a bible study in West TX 2 weeks ago and this kid was sitting there hitting the other kids around and talking about how he was Predator from alien vs. predator.
when i was a kid my parents were very clear about what was okay for movies and what was okay for the real world. I have never, in a church, had to put a kid in a full nelson headlock before and slam him against a wall to keep him from injuring his brother and the other students around him. I hope the big man upstairs was impressed with my kung fu moves though |

good for him Predator > Alien
But yeah, it's based around witch craft which isn't on good terms with the catholic church, but i think the church has bigger problems than harry potter and LOTR...good movies though (LOTR, haven't seen HP.) Kids are kids, from cowboys and indians to whatnot they'll make believe.... Chris |

I agree with you about HP on the priority list, but I guess they think that if they deal with the easy ones first, they can get it out of the way and work up to facing their real problems! |

The great pie war isn't true either I imagine.
Why is pie wars something to be taken lightly but not witchcraft? like you said, witchcraft is fantasy, not real. So whats the problem? Personally I am all for the erosion of christianity in young people. I doubt harry potter has any such direct effect though. A good book on biology, physics, or archeaology would be more effective. And no doubt the popularity of harry potter will encourage children to read so that they will, in the end, be better educated and able to deal with reality. Quote:

Witchcraft is pretty real (not in the harry potter way) although i think a lot of people were wrongly accused throughout history so there's confusion about it. But yeah harry potter isn't so bad but if I had kids I'd explain to them how it's not true witchcraft and not let em read it until mid teens.

Throwing pies at one another should be taken lightly, unless they're packed with rocks or something. Witchcraft shouldn't be taken lightly because there are people that seriously try to practice it to this day (i.e. Voodoo, Wicca, Black Magic, etc.). Albeit, they're work is for nothing, but they still try. Harry Potter is fantasy. The subject of witchcraft has been around for along time and is very real to some. Don't get me wrong J, I'm all for children stimulating their minds and reading, and I do agree that there are far worse things they could be doing. But misguidance doesn't come from just music, TV, junk food, and video games. And as for you being all for the erosion of Christianity in people, well, I have to respect your opinon. |
