Default OT handy wood folks or creative furniture idea folks or anyone else not busy

Scenario:

I need to raise up my PS3 and cable box off the floor. There isn't really enough space for a a/v rack beside the TV in the alcove. There's only about 2 feet of space max between the TV and the wall.

I was thinking of maybe putting in a shelf on the wall but will it hold? Or maybe a shelf with some of those hanging braces above or beneath?

HLEPE!

ooohh...Strider...I like that...only real issue there is that the shelf would have to come out far enough so that you can reach the PS3 for loading. But I likey...now to find someone that can do it well enough to make it look nice.

What about load? Should I put braces beneath or those fancy cable braces above?

Height of archway, depth your working with. TV dimensions. Any other AV equipment?
Do you want the TV on top or on the floor, or both off the floor

TV has to stay on floor. It's a 51" Hitachi HDTV rear projection.

Height of archway is 8ft.

Depth of archway is 3ft.

Width of archway is around 6ft.

TV takes up around 4 feet wide and all the depth.

No other A/V equipment in this room yet, but at the most we would only add a sound bar.

u should set up the shelf (height between the shelf and the tv) so that u can hang a soundbar underneath the shelf and have the cablebox and tv on top of it.

ill try to craft something up tonight.

but I think Strider has it nailed.

as for "supports" I would look into framing the wall with 2x4 then using 1/2" MDF as your support board to hold everything. you can use fancy wood to make the show side (what your lookin at) like a mahogany or Walnut to hide the MDF and framework above the TV. The 2x4 should be fine to support just about anything you put on there, then the MDF can be used as the top and you can even put some fancy **** back behind it all to make it all tie together

OK, don't go to any real trouble for this...I'm only looking for a cheapo solution. I'm going to go to Lowe's tonight to see if any of their ready to go shelves look decent enough.

or if you want on the cheap cheap......2x4's
1 8" on each wall, then use 2x4 to span to each support board put into the wall.
4 2x4 at 8' each to span the cove

and screws....of you can do toggle bolts in the drywall to anchor the supports. Or just screw into a stud on one of the 8" strips and it should be enough to hold the PS3 and cable box

just get something like this and put it next to the TV....without the baskets of course. i'm sure you can find some type of bookshelf under 2' wide that would fit between the TV and wall...

Dimensions: 31.5Hx11.75Wx10.75D"

i have a crazy idea...
2 floor lamps like these

and place a thing of wood on top of these two lamps

like this

would make a pretty cool lighting effect also
with 2 feet behind the tv, i think this is doable. plus u dont have to drill holes on the wall.

Go to Ikea and purchase this.

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70103622

It is very clean as it looks like it is floating since the supports are inside of the shelf and not above or below. It can hold up to 7lbs. I have one in my bedroom holding my DirecTV Box, DVD player and a lamp.

Combine these two ideas. It would be easy to make it stable and look nice.

This is a shot of a drawing cabinet at work to demonstrate what madcatz is talking about. Then you could put a 2" strip of fancy looking wood on the front to make it look nice (as already stated).

Since you have a projection tv, why not just put the ps3 and cable box on top of your tv?

Personally, I'd put a cleat on either side of the arched opening (just a piece of 1x2 screwed flat to the wall into whatever studs are available)- there should be at least 3 studs there. Cut down a piece of 3/4" plywood to fit the length/depth (wall to wall) of what you want the shelf to be. Then cut a piece of 1x3 to use as facing for support (so the shelf doesn't bow) as well as so you can paint it to match your trim in the room, or the paint in the alcove, whatever. 1x3 will hide the 1x2 used as a cleat on the ends, too, so you wind up with what looks like a big 2.75" thick shelf. Put the front edge of the shelf even or just back from the front of the opening, but leave it a couple inches shy of the back so you can run your cords down. If you care A LOT about not seeing cords, you could make a false back for the alcove, etc.
