3" of clutch free play = very bad?
So I got a new clutch and flywheel installed at a dealer last week, and as I drove off I noticed there was 3" of free play in the clutch pedal. It was kinda fun to drive around that way, biting point close to the floor and everything, and I didn't think much about how it could be a bad thing - after all, many cars have biting points close to the floor, right?
Well anyway, today I take it in to another shop and by chance the mechanic said that 3" of free play is extremely bad. Searching around the forums here, I've come to the same conclusion too - thinking back on it, it was kind of hard to shift into 5th gear at times. Plus, for the last 8 days there would be this weird smell coming from the clutch/transmission every time I drove - I thought that was just something that new clutches do - but now I should have caught on that something went wrong!

IIRC, average free play is about 1". If the free play is excessive, the clutch may not release completely. This can cause hard shifting, gear clash and damage to the gear teeth.

Ok, so the auto mechanic didn't do it right - he adjusted it to very little free play - so little, in fact, that the clutch started chirping when it was engaged! I drove around that way for about a day.
Doing a little research, I discovered that meant the throwout bearing is pushing just slightly on the on the clutch release fingers. Doh! I went back and adjusted it to 1", but the clutch still chirps a little when I push it down to the 1" point, obviously. Is that bad? Also, my old clutch had the chirping problem, and soon after the clutch started to get really worn. Don't tell me all I had to do was adjust the free play and therefore prevent my clutch from eating itself... |

I am assuming a stock clutch?
I went with an ACT clutch and it engages very near the floor, but a stock one should be a lot higher. |

Yes, it's a stock clutch with a Fidanza flywheel.
