Default 2007 STI Throttle / Hesitation Issue

Everyone,

As many of you already know, the 2007 STI has significant throttle/hesitation issues that have not been fully addressed by SOA. While aftermarket tuners may have reduced or eliminated this problem, most owners are concerned about having it fixed in stock ROM form from SOA as well.

I've sent a letter to SOA managment detailing the issue and our frustration. I've also started a thread over on IWSTI.com requesting:

1. Name or username
2. VIN
3. Case number (if you have one)

The link is here: http://www.iwsti.com/forums/showthre...34#post1235734

I'm compiling this into a list and will send it in a follow-up letter to SOA on Friday. If you have this problem and want to be included on this list, please visit this link and provide your info.

And when you're done, get back here to NASIOC.com!

There are pages of discussion on this both here and on IWSTI. Where is everybody when you need them? Supposedly this area is monitored by SOA/Subaru. If we hope to get some action, a showing here is real important!!

I called local subaru dealership (renick in fullerton, ca)...they said they know about the problem, but told me to break in my car to at least 800 miles..If the throttle was still hestitating come down and they have 2 solutions to fix it...I notice the hesitation realllly bad in 2nd gear.

You may have some problems convincing people here to join this thread. Many die hard subaru owners are satisified even with the lag. Plus this is an enthusiast type forum. Most people here mod their cars. Personally, I believe there has been enough on all of the forums for SOA to get the ball rolling to satisfy their customers (they are aware). Hopefully, everyone will be satisfied. Subaru is very good about warranty work and issues, especially on their halo car, the STI. A similar issue happened with the 04 Sti's and Subaru rectified it.

I guess I digressed there.

I still think people who have opened cases should post here.

man you guys are impatient. Subaru sends out the TSB on a reflash for the STi to the dealerships and you guys still are not happy? If your still having issues don't you think they are already more then aware of them and are working on a solution?

such a minor concern when you get right down to it that subaru is already well aware of and still you complain. should have bought an evo guys. Oh but wait... they have one of the worst warranties out there.

Yeah, I was about to say...weren't you the one who suggested putting this thread up in the Warranty section??

Even though some people here may mod their cars, I think it's good to document this in the Warranty section.

As a side note, SOA did contact me after I sent the email to their management. I don't know yet if it's the standard CS response I'm getting or something more.

The reason why I said post here is that NASIOC is the longest running forum that SOA knows about. This is the correct place for it. My point was that SOA is aware and they have dealt with issues like this before and made owners happy (there is a dev and test process they must go through, that takes some time on new ECU flash releases). I seriusly doubt SOA or FHI is out to make owners angry. They base much of their business on customer satisfaction and have a very good reputation. I doubt they want to ruin that rep when they are on the up and up and want to become a more Lexus/Acura type company in the USA instead of being associated with Hyundai and Mitsubishi. Especially with their halo car.

And for all the first time Subaru owners:

Please look at the stickies. If you do research you will notice that Subaru has one of the most mod firendly, leanient warranties. Also, they are very good at fixing any bugs that they release in a car. The only other company I could say that is better would be Honda, but with their recent odomoter scandle, I don't know if I trust them either. Do you know that you have a wear warranty for 36k miles on your brake pads and clutch? Who does that? Subaru does. All that I am saying is that if you be patient, give SOA a chance, but go ahead and post your case numbers here. You will not regret it, and you may (just like me) become a die hard subaru owner for life for various reasons (safety, quality, service).

Default Update to my SOA Open Letter

Got a response back from SOA on my open letter to them. Salutations and names have been left off. My response to this email is at the bottom:

Thank you for taking the time to gather information from other 2007 STI
owners and for sending your collective concerns to Subaru of America
management. Please be assured that your message has been received and
reviewed by those on your distribution list.

First, I would like to thank you and the other Subaru Impreza/WRX/STI
enthusiasts who have been loyal to our products and genuinely care about
their vehicles. Subaru realizes that owners of this model line take
great pride in the ownership of their Subaru vehicles. It is such pride
and enthusiasm that makes the members of the on-line forums so unique
and passionate, and a special group of our owners.

We, at Subaru of America, recognize that your group is frustrated and
apologize that you are expressing a loss of confidence in our ability to
address your concerns. It is our understanding that our re-flash
efforts have addressed most owners' concerns to their satisfaction. If
this is not the situation, and the dealer has verified the concern,
those owners should contact Subaru of America by phone (800-782-2783) or
through "Contact Us" on www.subaru.com. We will then be able to work
with each owner to individually address their concerns.

Our process is to create a case for each owner who contacts Subaru
Customer Service. Once a case is created, a customer service
representative will work with the owner, dealer and others to identify,
verify and address the concern. Each case is also coded and issues are
reported to SOA and FHI management on a regular basis.

If your group has concerned owners who have not yet contacted Subaru of
America, we urge them to do so that we can document their concern. We
cannot address a concern with anyone other than the vehicle owner. Also,
because of the variables (mileage, owner's driving characteristics,
terrain conditions, dealer's efforts to resolve the situation, etc.),
each case needs to be verified and addressed individually.

We want all of our customers to be confident that their vehicle is
operating as designed. We will continue to work on your individual case,
as well as others that are reported to us, until all parties are
satisfied that their vehicle is operating safely and performing as
designed. We recognize that word of mouth is our best advertising and we
appreciate all that our enthusiasts do and have done to promote loyalty
to our company's products.

I will be following the progress of your case with our Customer Service
and Field Staff. In the interim, please contact me if you have any
questions. Thank you.

-------------------------------------------------------

My response:

Thank you very much for responding to my email. It's very encouraging to understand that Subaru management is receiving visibility into this issue with 2007 STI models. I will update the other owners that have discussed this problem with me on this email.

As for my case, I had my car logged by xxxxxx at xxxxx Subaru earlier today. The conclusion is that this is caused by inadvertant throttle input from the driver. The logs showed a small change in throttle position that therefore caused the surge/hesitation during certain RPMs. I somewhat agree with this, however, I was unable to re-create this by deliberately changing the throttle position. I still consider this a problem and hope that SOA and FHI are working to resolve it.

Thanks again and hoping to hear back from SOA on a resolution.

I have noticed the stuttering problem on my 07 wrx limited. Does this only apply to the STI? I notice it between 2-3.2k rpm and at 1/2 throttle or less. It feels like it gets minor surges of power that make acceleration uneven.

I only know of the STIs with this issue, but it could be an overall Subaru turbo thing. Not sure.

Hey ccsalvatore2003, so the reflash totally fixed the throttle/hesitation issue for you? I have an 07 STI Limited and got flash from Sheehy Subaru in Springfield back in Feb. But on the invoice it only says:

Customer request ECM reprogramming
Reprogrammed Engine Control Module
455-288 .6 UPG48

So I'm wondering if I got the same flash as you. But the reflash I got tfrom them didn't do a thing for me . Still experiencing the same throttle/hesitation issue. I'm really wondering what the heck they did.

Thats just the warranty code so that they can get paid from SOA (if you typed it exactly as they did, they entered it wrong. has nothing to do with the car, they just wont get paid, hehehe).
We normally don't type out stuff on the customers invoice like the re flash number or such. You guys are the minority, most people don't know what a re flash is, and would simply be confused if all the numbers we deal with during the course of a repair were typed on the RO.
If the car is still hesitating, give me a call and set up a time to come in. We can look at it with the SSM and see if the ECU took the flash, if it didn't we can do it, if it did, we can try to figure out what else is causing the problem.

Great response from a dealer--thanks for chiming in here.

FYI, there's plenty of people over on IWSTI.com talking about this issue as well. The reflash, in most people's opinions, has not completely resolved the issue.

The new CID value in post #17, above, is incorrect. It should be A2UJ000J. See http://forums.openecu.org/viewtopic.php?p=14455#14455.
