Default What do the MRT cat and Chernobyl have in common?

Ahh, the MRT exhaust system. So cheap, so simple, so much power...

But that MRT-supplied "hi-flo" cat, don't you just hate it? :monkey: AO, you know what I'm talkin' about!

So, I go to pull the MRT system off my car this weekend to fix an exhaust leak behind the cat and to move my front O2 sensor from mid-pipe to just in front of the cat. I am doing this in an attempt to emulate Brullen's fix for their CE light issue on their header.

So, I get the system apart, and what do I see? I see a BIG wave in the front face of my cat.

Which should look something more like this (the rear of the cat):

So, it would seem I have a bad cat. Go figure. I could still see through the mesh of the cat matrix just fine. I don't know where the material at the front of the cat when to, there isn't any excessive metal bits, in fact, nothing fell out of the cat. Yet there's probably a good inch of matrix missing from the front, and it is totally wavy/warped.

I replaced the cat and reset the CE light. I haven't driven enough to see if my relocation of the front O2 sensor has done anything for P0420. Or, it could be that the MRT cat was such a hunk of crap that it was bad from day one. Or maybe it wasn't a three-way cat (anyone know?). I have a LOT less popping during on/off throttle and shifting. I'll update later if the CE light stays off.

Comments on the cat meltdown? Has anyone seen that before? No chunks, but missing matrix. Not clogged, but definitely bad. Too much heat? Too much excess fuel detonating in front of the cat? If so, where are the cat pieces? STFT is 0%, LTFT is 2%.

The poor man's super exhaust. I kinda accepted the fact that some corners were going to be cut, in the manufacturing/design of this system. It is, afterall, a few hundred dollars cheaper than the compititon's offering.
