Exclamation My New Wagon only Mod -- Check it Out!

I just finished with the plywood sail mod on my WRX Wagon. The sail has cut my 0-60 times in half (it's down to about 3 seconds now) and it looks pretty nifty to boot.

No doubt you've heard of this very important, requisite mod before, but perhaps you do not know how to preform it. So, I've taken the time to document the steps to add the sail to my wagon.

What you'll need:
A 5'x7'x3" piece of plywood
A can opener
metal straight edge
100' of Tin foil
Elmer's wood glue
Nylon Rope (optional, purely aesthetic)
Mopar 20-valve V-10. 488cu in engine (can be easily purchased through Mopar or taken directly from a late model Viper)

The mod:
1) Install the Mopar 20-valve V-10 engine (If you have not done so already, instructions can be easily found in the Turbo Drive Train board, so I don't feel I need to cover this very simple mod)
2) Use the can opener and straight edge to scribe a horizontal line on the roof of your car (*This is very important* scribe the line from the front to back of the car, not side to side. I've heard of people incorrectly installing the plywood sail -- it is an all too common mistake. In fact, some recent posts discussing the differences in speed vs. rpm readings [high rpms at low speeds] could very well be caused by a vertcle installation of the plywood sail*) Make sure that you can see the line -- I always continue to scribe the line until the paint is completely removed. Don't worry, you'll be covering this up with the sail later. Also, keep in mind that the sometimes shoddy Subaru paint comes off easily, so no need to rush.

2)cover the the board with wood glue and carefully wrap the board with the tin foil. If you see too many creases in the tin foil, you'll have to start over, as this will significantly decrease the performance of this mod.

3) Now use the wood glue to cover the scribed line on the roof of your car, also cover one edge of the board with the glue.

4) Now line up the glued edge of the plywood sail with the glue on your scribed line on the car (before you do, make sure for the last time that you have made a horizontal line, not a verticle one. Once the sail is on, it is on for good -- Elmers glue holds indefinitely!) and press and hold firmly for 30 minutes to a half an hour.

5. (Optional) After the plywood sail has had time to set, string the nylon rope through the roof rail, then over your plywood sail and through the roof rail on the opposite side. Rinse and repeat. This will add the the important "rigging effect" that all the chicks dig.

6) Enjoy!

You're done! Now get in the driver's seat and reap the immediate performance gains of your new plywood sail mod. You will be the envy of all your neighbors and especially the i-clubbers! I should have my picts up shortly, as soon as I finish building my camera from a discarded crack pipe, an old plastic tub of Philidelphia cream cheese and a Sam Adams bottle. And please, don't thank me, I feel I owe this to the Subaru community!

I am really interested in giving this a shot on my RS. My only two concerns are:
1) How will it work with the sunroof? Can I offest the sail to the edge of the roof to allow the sunroof to open and close properly, or can I notch the sail to leave enough clearance for the roof without any performance loss?

2) I park my car in a garage. Is there any fold down sails so I can pull in and out of the garage, or will I just have to leave the car outside from now on?

Where did you get this. Does anyone make it? How much? What color is your car? What did you make the sail out of? HOW MUCH DOES IT WEIGH?

Please right back soon, I need this now!! I hope it is not one of the horrible group buy type things.. because I have to have it.

Yah, I heard about the STi version, but I believe it is a carbon fiber sail and is lacking the rigging that the chicks dig, so I'm not too keen on that. I hadn't heard about the Mitsu sail, but, brace yourself for this, I heard the EVO is coming!

paultg:
Please re-read my earlier post, as I believe that explains what goes into the plywood sail. I found most of my parts at Home Depot. The sail weighs about 15 pounds, but it's worth the extra weight. I found if you take out the battery and alternator and instead use the tin foil for solar power (you can use 12 guage speaker wire as the connectors, try paperclips for terminals) that you easily offset the weight gain. I am also assuming you already have installed your 488cu in 20 valve v-10, so there is probably no need to talk further about that...

Then there's that problem with the RS. I actually traded in my RS to get the WRX wagon for the express purpose of adding the sail. Also, there is very little to add the rigging to, so you lose that, which chicks dig. I've been mulling your problem over, though, and have come up with a solution, albeit not a great one. Try a Yakima or Thule rack and attach the sail to that. You should be able to continue with your normal sunroof operations, and you can remove the sail to fit you RS in your garage...

redbob:
Nice engine, yours look like a stock model, you may have notice that mine is the twin turbo Venom version, which is actually bored and stoked and ported -- good for about 800hp.

O, thanks a bunch! I will have to get to Home Depot before one of the garage days so the NESIC group can help me. I have plenty of 12 ga speaker wire inside the car, so I can just cut some of it out to use for extra weight savings while replacing the alternator.

On the rigging, I was thinking I could just run the rope though the windows on my 2-door. I could even take it to a glass place and have them drill some holes in the glass. That would be really trick! I could then exit/enter the vehicle through the sun roof all the time, seeing my big sail everytime I use the car!

Now, I was thinking a bit more. Would it help to put another sail on the hood and trunk?

My V10 has 4 superchagers, and an extra 500HP shot of nitrous (for those times when someone gets a bit ahead), so I have plenty of power to handle the extra weight. You should see it, my entire trunk is the gas tank now! I just sealed it all with fiberglass, who needs to spend money on an extra fuel cell! I had to put wagon rear springs in though, because the gas was weighing the rear of the car down.

Yeah, mine is the stock Version ABC, which is way old school. But, I plan on upgrading it to a Version XY&Z, as soon as the flux capicitator comes in. Then I'm gonna install a superduperturbocharger with a Big Gulp Shot of Nitrous. Plus, I have a Thule rack with kayak attachment. Have you seen what a sail can do when you attach it to a kayak. Oh my!!!!!
