Wastegate rattle?
I have a rattle coming from the wastegate area. 2009 wrx with 45k. Its happening at idle and very loud during decel. I just had the downpipe put in today and i think if anything it is louder now. For a few months it was a slight rattle and i was leaning towards heatshield or cat, both of which are now gone.
When i put tension on the actuator arm it seems to supress the rattle. Is this something that a new wastegate actuator would fix?. Should that arm move at all when the car is off... Mine does not move at all. If it is inside the turbo is that something that can be fixed or does it require having the turbo rebuilt? I have stage 2 maps... i dont want to run the extra boost incase it will make the issue worse. Right now it does not cutout under fullpower or throw any codes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GwdS8mGw48 Thanks for any help!

Just curious what you think it is. If tension on the arm reduces the rattle that would lead me to believe it has something to with the Wastegate being lose or stuck slightly open. Maybe i am way of though.
I was hoping someone has seen / fixed this before. |

Seems I may have lucked out. Pulled the actuator, the pivot arm was very rusty and did not move freely. Sanded the rust off the added some never-seize and the actuator seems to be able to close the flapper on it is own. Hopefully the rattle is now gone permanently.

This is so frustrating, I just found this today after a few years of chasing down heat shields and most recently a built engine (for other reasons too). And now the rattle is still there, grrr. It wasn't until today when I pushed on the actuator lever that I found out it was the WG making the noise! Weird!
So how does one fix this? Which part of the arm did you remove and oil up? |

Just pulled the arm and sanded any rust and flat areas. No problems since.
