Honda has been in Marysville, OH since what? 1982 I think? BMW in Greer SC since '99? They build X5's and Z3/Z4's there. Mercedes in Vance, AL. Hyundai is building in Mississippi if I recall correctly.

Longer I think. I graduated high school near there in '91. I remember the BMW plant was under construction then.

It was definitely up and running by 1993 at a minimum.

It didn't help that my dad custom-ordered it with MT. I think they just used a tranny and shifter out of some sort of truck. Our next car was a Corolla and it seemed like a Ferrari after the Volare.

It's a good thing. They've worked hard to remove all the harmful VOCs in new cars. It may smell nice, but it's hell on your liver.
American cars still smell, because, quite frankly, they don't give a damn.

They got some nerve to criticize people for not being loyal to the big 3 when (sometimes blind) customer loyalty is the only reason they didn't go out of business 10 or 20 years ago.

There is a huge hyundai plant in montgomery, AL. They are building a kia plant in Westpoint, GA. There are 1 or 2 honda plants in AL as well.

I wonder what the count of foreign auto manufacturers with plants in the US versus domestic manufacturers with plants in the US.

How does that sell cars?

Go see OC and tell him he's an idiot.

Oh yea, why am I not surprised that the guy has an accent.

I used to live in Savannah, and I knew who you were talking about immediately. That isn't a new tactic for them in advertising.

There is a Toyota engine manufacturing plant in AL as well, building the 4.0L V6, 4.7L V8, and 5.7L V8 for the Tundra, Tacoma, and Sequoia. Toyota has a plant in West Virginia supplying engines to the Corolla, Matrix, RX350, and Sienna. They make transmissions for Highlander, RX350, Sienna, Camry, Avalon, Solara, and Venza. It has been a huge economic boost for my area.

The ad was more than disturbing to listen to.

I think it's great they're trying to get people to blindly buy junk cars.

And or the writer of that radio spot. Try blaming the labor unions or putting American auto companies in a stranglehold. Some people just don't deserve to make as much money as they are.

Remember a few years ago when someone in Japan said Americans were fat, stupid and lazy? I thought that was the greatest thing ever.

I'll be down in Blufton at the end o this month and might have to stop by to see OC Welch just to pull their chain a little and see if they'll take my "rice ready" car as a trade. Of course, I won't actually be trading.

Nissan Altimas and maybe a few other cars are made in TN. You can't miss them, they sport a round blue sticker with 3 white stars on the windows (The TN state flag).

Volkswagen is opening a plant in TN in a couple years. TN is a hotbed for Japanese based suppliers as well, with Aisin, Denso, Nippon, etc.

US Jobs indeed. That's $90,000 (between the two) that paid for foreign labor.

Oh, and they were both colossal pieces of crap. I mean, the paint on the dashboard flaked off in 2 years...on BOTH $45,000 trucks. Plus dead transmissions, rear ends, transfer cases, head gaskets...

My WRX wagon in 5 years has broken once, at 98,000 miles, and it cost $35 and 20 minutes to fix.

Some part content stats from cars.com:

* Ford F-150: 80% domestic content, down from 90% for '07
* Chevrolet Silverado 1500: 85% for '08, down from 90% for '07
* Toyota Camry/Solara: 68% for '08, down from 78% for '07
* Honda Accord: 60% for '08, down from 65% for '07
* Toyota Corolla: 50% for '09, down from 65% for '08
* Toyota Matrix: 65% for '09, down from 75% for '08
* Dodge Ram: 68% for '08, down from 72% for '07
* Honda Pilot: 70% for '09, same as '08
* Honda Civic: 70% for '08, up from 55% for '07

Not to mention Ford Escape nosedived from 90% in '07 to 65% in '08. Ford Edge plummeted from 95% in '07 to 68% in '08.

Meanwhile, Nissan, Honda, Toyota, and Hyundai each have roughly 25% of their fleets in the US with at least 75% domestic part content.

As we all know, the numbers are way, way, way closer between foreign and domestic than these commercials would lead you to believe.

And that couldn't have anything to do with your driving, could it?

<-- Got 22-23 MPG around town with his '02 WRX when he wasn't driving like an asshat.
