Unhappy Rain Tires?

What are the best tires for wet weather driving?

and

What are the safest all-round summer tires (maybe the same thing)?

You're going to get different opinions on what's "best". I have Goodyear EAGLE F1's GS-D3 and it's certainly one of the best in the rain. You can drive stupidly fast in wet weather if you're inclined to. Wet braking is awesome, and the cornering limits are so hight, you will back off before the tires slip - I guarantee it..

I wouldn't put them through a Toronto winter, however !

as for the safest summer tires ? I don't know what to answer.

I could say more grip is safer, however if you were trying to push them to the limit on public roads (kind of dumb), and you made a mistake, you'd leave the road at a MUCH faster rate than you would on RE92's

Most high performance street tires are also good in the rain. BFG KDW are supposed to be designed for the wet, but I have never used them personally

Do you mean best as in both super grippy in the dry and in the wet, or as in best in the wet overall?

The reason I'm asking: I love my Impreza and push it to reasonable limits on public streets and highways, but it's also my day-to-day car and often my wife and two-year-old daughter are strapped in. I just took off my year-old RE92's and replaced them with Hakka1's. I want to put on the safest summer tire (for the best price) next spring (I know this questiion seems premature, but I like to do a lot of research). Note that my car is a TS not a WRX or STI, so I don't need stupid-fast tires, but something that will give me the maximum control in summer, rain or shine.

the top contenders would be

Eagle F1 GS D3
S-03 Pole Position
Pilot Sport
Fire Hawk SZ50 EP

I uesd the Goodyears as wet tires on my track car this year and was really impressed with them. I had way more grip then anyone else out on the track. I will be putting a set of them on my WRX in the spring.

Eagle F1 GS D3's...... Are SOOOOO AWESOME....

Really! the best tires I have EVER had.... I'm just upset I have to take them off because of the cold weather! I have them on BBS RK 17x7 Rims.... Got em off of Tire Rack!

Man GET these tires... NO! Don't take my word for it alone, read the reviews on theses tires on Tire Rack... then compare to others of similar type... and read those reviews! They are reasonably priced, too! And, the tread pattern looks so cool!

Im going to throw the Khumo MX into the mix. Its not a normal tire in terms of how freakin grippy it is, but the fact it is so grippy and I have yet to have ANY issues in the rain with them has me just amazed... I had more issues with my Khumo 712's than I have with these tires, and those sucked compaired to the MX's on dry tarmac!

But if you want something slightly less serious (yet more expensive surprisingly) I say the S-03's.

How do less expensive tires like the Falken Ziex 512 and Kuhmo Ecsta 712 compare to the Goodyear Eagles and/or Toyo T1-s?

I'm planning on a set of Yoko ES100's in the spring. I've heard from a few people first person that they're way better in the wet than the RE92's ever were on there best day. And much like you I'm not looking for an expensive, stoopid fast tire for the summer.

Something else to consider during your shopping is that you'll pay more for a Z rating. Shop for a W or Y.

for rain driving, nothing comes close to the Eagle F1 GS-D3 they are simply astounding. youll barely notice that the roads are wet

"Z" speed rated tires are rated for over 149 mph
"W" speed rated tires have a speed limit of 168mph
"Y" speed rated tires have a speed limit of 186mph

both "W" and "Y" rated tires are still "Z" rated tires
