Default How to find out if I should get a refund for the MV fee from the stealership?

Before I signed the contract and purchase a new 2013 impreza the stealership salesman told me the Estimated MV Fees are $302.00 and they told me that if the it comes out to be less than what I paid for they will give me back the remaining of unused amount.

So now I got my real registration and the real metal plates instead of the "paper" plates. I called the stealership and asked them how much were the DMV fee's and when should I receive a refund for the unused funds and guess what they said. "Actually looks like we calculated it to the exact amount of $302 and all the funds you paid for are used to register the vehicle."

It's hard for me to believe them that they calculated it to the exact amount. I just feel like they're lying to me and don't want to refund me what I deserve. Isn't it illegal for dealerships to not refund the remaining of unused MV fees?

Is there a way to find out how much was the actual amount used to register the vehicle or "MV fee" was used?

Felt like I just got raped out of my wallet blindly.

Go to the website of your state RMV and find the formula?

Its not hard to calculate the reg fees of a new car..

But is there a way to obtain actual records as evidence?

Even if I calculated the amount it'll be my words against theirs when I bring it up to them. They will come up with more lies.

Call the RMV?

Ask the dealership for a receipt?

It doesn't matter what the actual fees were. If the dealership did the running around for you, the rest of your money went towards 'runners'.

Next time, ask the dealership for your paperwork, and then you can waste a day going to your DMV/RMV and stand in line yourself. You're paying them for a service.

If they used a registration service like regUSA, the amount you paid was probably very close to the real number. Based on the amount you paid I would guess that they did use such a service.

When I buy a car, the dealer breaks it down:

runner's fee $15
Sales Tax $1687.50 (6.25% of $27,000)
Title Fee $75
Registration Fee $24

How the hell could a dealer not be able to figure it out to the penny ahead of time?

fill in your profile and we'll have some clue what state you're in. Or what country. We don't know the fees in Equador.

I live in NYC but purchased my car in NJ. Registered my new subie in NYC.

MV Fees: 294.00 (Temp Tag, Registration, Title, etc)
Document Fee: 189.00

That is what the dealer break down with me, but it doesn't show runner fee...title fee...registration fee....

Yours come out to be $114...that's nearly 3x less than what I paid for. BTW did you have to paid doc fee?

Massachusetts is not NYC.

The Doc fee is separate from the reg fees. Most people pay for it.

Yeah, but still shouldn't be such a big difference... $294 vs $114

Quick search says:

$47 (2 years reg)
$25 (plates)
$50 (title)
$30 (NYC Use Tax 2 yrs)
$50 (NYC Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District Tax 2 yrs)
=$202 + Sales Tax

$100 sounds about right for a runner fee.

That's what I got ! $202 ! But how did you get the break down? I don't see the break down in my screen.

Even if it's $202 plus 8.875% tax it'll be $219.93, the dealership still owes me $74.07 difference which can get me a font hood protector.....or mud flaps....or cargo tray...

Sales tax isnt on the fees, its on the price you paid for the car.

8.875% of $20k is $1775.

Sales tax is not included in the DMV fee or doc fee. I'm talking about the MV fee.

Yes I have it in my email and I think it's even in the sales contract since it's a law.

Then show them the paperwork and make them prove that they dont owe you any money.

Did you not read and understand the paperwork before you signed it?

I didn't read it...was too excited about my new car and just signed it....I just took their words that they said "Well if the MV amount is less than what you paid for we will refund you the money. Now if you can just sign right here...."
