Default what happen if you twist your oil filter too tight?

I didn't do the oil change myself last time and when I do the oil change after 3500 miles, I couldn't take off the oil filter by hands. I went to walmart to get an oil filter wrench to get that thing off.

the manual has a warning saying do not make the oil filter too tight.

the oil is totally black too. damn!

over tightening could cause leaking. the reason the oil could be black is the brand of oil used. some are blacker than others.

i've never been able to remove an oil filter by hand. and yeah, black oil is "normal" that's why it needs changing tighten a half turn or 3/4 past where the gasket seats.

I was asking some people about the oil filter wrench, then they just told me they twisted it off by hands.

I've never been able to get the filter off by hand. . .not on my WRX or the other cars I've worked on. I always tighten the filter on 1/2 -3/4 turns after the gasket touches and it's always been on tight when changing it afterwards. Just use the filter wrench and be happy.

Ding. As long as you're tightening by hand, you really don't have to worry about over-tightening it. I've never used an oil filter wrench, but sometimes it does take a lot of effort if I did the full 3/4 turn when putting it on.

Usually your hands are greasy. Sometimes it is an akward angle. Get and oil filter wrench. End of story.

Yeah, I hand tighten mine on, but come time for the change, I usually have to nudge it ever so slighty with a filter wrench before I take it off by hand the rest of the way.

Same here. I think you really have to way overtighten an oil filter for it to leak.

I always hand tighten mine, and come time to remove it, I am able to remove the filter by hand. Occasionally I have to use both hands. I've never had a problem with it leaking or coming loose.

Fram makes oil filters with a textured rubber coating on the ends to help increase your grip...handy. Some vinyl or latex gloves keep the oil off your skin as well as provide some extra gripping power.

The one and only time I've had a shop change my oil, I wasn't able to get the oil filter off. Not even with several different types of wrenches. Even the old screwdriver through the filter resulted in a broken #3 philips and still it didn't budge!

I was unable to budge it with a 14-inch pipe wrench. My 30-inch breaker bar with the end-cap style oil filter wrench simply dimpled in the flats on the filter!

I ultimately ended up crushing the metal can with large channel locks until I got a tear in the metal. I then cut the entire outside of the can off using tin snips until only the mounting flange was left. I ended up prying the mounting flange away from the face of the oil filter interface on the car, and using a centerpunch wedged in one of the holes in the mounting flange was able to hammer it around until it finally came loose and I was able to unthread it the rest of the way.

I called up and raised absolute living hell with the shop that changed it. There was absolutely no reason to have torqued it down that tight.

Needless to say, I've changed the oil myself on all my vehicles since then.

If you get FRAM oil filters they have grips so it's not that hard to unscrew it with your hand. Although I found out the hard way that once you put on borla headers your hand can only touch about 1/4 of the oil filter... so an oil filter wrench is required

Still do mine by hand after the Borla's (well, minus the stipulations I listed above). But you're right, Borla headers hang down a little farther and do present a little extra challenge for removal

Simple trick I've learned from working w/ VWs(not enough room for a wrentch). Tighten w/ your non dominant hand, left for me since I'm right handed, and loosen w/ the dominant hand. Been doing it this way for 10 years w/out problems.
