Default Tire size question - will tires from an Outback fit?

We are thinking of trading in our 2006 Legacy Outback for a 2014 Impreza. We bought a great set of snow tires (Nokian Hakka R) last winter and I would like to use them on the Impreza if possible.

I know the wheels will fit, they are the same size: 16x6.5 with a 48 offset.

The big issue is the tire size. The snow tires that I have are 225/60-16 and it looks like the Impreza recommended is 205/55-16. It looks like I would have a speedo error of nearly 7%, but more importantly, would they fit? Has anyone else used Legacy or Legacy Outback tires on their Impreza?

I suggest you call Tire Rack at 888-456-1746, and see what they say.

Think that they would be a little too high and maybe, just maybe a bit too wide for the Impreza. After the snow and slush build up it is likely to be problematic. A 195/60-16 would work better for the Impreza (aka Blizzak) and would work well in snow/ice conditions (skinnier is better).

TireRack believes that they will be too tall. The funny thing is that using these nearly new snow tires was one reason to buy a new Impreza. We are now back to looking at the Jetta TDI. We wouldn't buy a new Outback or Legacy because they are too large for us. We haven't gotten any bigger, our car doesn't need to...

They should fit. There was an earlier model Impreza with XV rims and tires on. The XV tires measure out to be 225/55/17 which is about 26.8 inches in diamter. 225/60/16 also measures out to be 26.8 inches.

Have you considered the XV?

Good luck with the TDI's reliability. Don't ask me how I know this.

Yes, we considered it and eliminated it. We don't want another lifted wagon. We don't need the extra ground clearance even living in Vermont. Even on the worse snow days, the roads are plowed relatively quickly since we live near the city, the country would be different of course.

We ended up buying a 2014 Impreza Sport Premium, but haven't taken delivery of it yet. It will be a big step up from our 2006 Outback. (I still have my 92X Aero)

They do technically "fit", but its very tight. I test fit the wheels on my "Impreza" - a 92X Aero just to see. I wouldn't want to run these in the winter.

This shows that at full lock there is less than a 1/2" of space.

This picture shows them straight on:
