Default New clutch after 10k?

Ok, so I got my 06 WRX a little over a year and a half ago, and just now I'm experiencing clutch problems. I have about 10,000 miles on it right now. Contacted my dealer and they told me Subaru clutches should last for at least 60,000 miles! The only mods I have are the SPT catback and intake, now I've heard of 06 WRX clutches going bad quickly, but for him to come back and say that pissed me off. I'll admit I learned to drive stick on the car, but I was never rough on it and always strived to keep the clutch intact...who's to blame my so called "crappy" driving or possibly faulty clutch?

Told me it will be a 1400-1600 job.... will finding a shop elsewhere and having them fix it void my warranty?

i had a wrx wagon...16 thousand mile...no clutch problems at all..i tracked it too...can i ask how you drive it, do you sit at lights with your foot on the clutch the whole time?..do you ride the clutch at all when breaking or shifting...there are many mistakes people can make driving that could cause clutches to go, I would say it could be your driving. Did they check the throw-out bearing? That can go very quickly from keeping your clutch kinda in kinda out...and from keeping it depressed for long periods of time sitting at lights and riding it out up hills and shiz...

Yeah I do occasionally ride it, but not too much. I'm more the in-out driver, but I dont just keep it in the whole time I'm at a light. A friend of mine told me the throw-out bearing could be my problem as well, I'll take it up to the dealer and see what they can do.

I just thought a whole new clutch was a bit much for under 10,000 miles...

Yah a clutch and the parts that make up the clutch assemble are often grouped into one hole chunk....the clutch pad is most likely still fine unless the throw out bearing was going for a long time to make the clutch wear and screw up the surface on the fly wheel check this out and you will see the parts that make it up.

other then that fix it quick before you screw up your output shaft like i did...i let my throw-out bearing on my cobra go so long it wound up breaking and the output shaft got hosed....so dont let that happen and good luck

You may have glazed it a bit if you are slipping it a lot, which can cause some chatter but make no mistake if your clutch is worn out after 10K miles, it's your driving, not the clutch. I did an engine hybrid build at 84K miles and decided to go ahead and replace the clutch while I was in there and there was a lot of meat left on it and that's after a lot of spirited driving and 5 autoX events.

If you go through the dealer, buy your parts elsewhere and have them do the labor. Much cheaper.

What exactly are you experiencing that you think your clutch is bad? Did the guy at the dealership drive the car to confirm that it is indeed the clutch or is this an over the phone diagnosis?

If you really blew threw a clutch in 10k miles you would KNOW why it went. I would imagine you would get more out of a clutch than 10k even if you were a horrible driver.

Take your car to a reputable shop and get a second opinion. The dealer may be trying to take you for a ride.


PS. they cant void your warranty for having the work done at another shop.

Most likely you wont lose your warranty. If you "lose" your warranty, you will only lose tranny issues. Subaru can refuse to replace parts under warranty, but they wont really void it. If your turbo blows up, they will replace that under warranty as it has nothing to do with the tranny work that got done. Now if you can show them that a good shop replaced your clutch, and you still have problems after that, then they will probably still do work. They will really only refuse work if they can prove that either its your driving that is causing the problem, or that it was a modification to your car that caused the problem.

Just clutch slip at the moment, about 2 weeks ago I got a burning smell for about 10 minutes but nothing after that. It was an over the phone diagnosis, but the more I researched the problem, the less happy I am about forking over $1600 to replace the whole damn thing. No burning, no chatter, just slip.

I had an Integra whose clutch went at 20K as it apparently was not adjusted correctly at the factory. While its usually a driver issue depending, on whats wrong, maybe its not entirely driver related.

newer subaru's are hydraulic, not cable, so it really hard for them to be out of adjustment

You might be able to try and get it under warrenty. As ong as there are no signs of abuse when they look in there they will have to replace it. Take it to the dealer and have a tech drive it. I learned how to drive stick with mine and my clutch didnt go till 40,000 miles and that was 10k after my vf39 swap.

If you have a dealer that's cool in your state, try to go to them. You know that the clutch is slipping, and it's most likely due to your learning curve/driving habits. If the dealer is cool, they will at least take care of you "1 time". It would be worth finding a good dealer, even if it means driving a few hours to get to them.

I had the same problem w/ my 06. i was at 12k. mine would slip and make a squeeking sounds while driving. It was warranty replaced by the dealer who said that it wasn't the first time they had seen this happen. It all started right after going stage 2. I've driven 4 stick shift cars over 12 years and this was def the shortest lasting clutch. Now at 50k and no issues popping back up. Get yours warrantied or fixed at a shop then throw the old clutch through the dealers window.

My sisters car had similar issues followed by tranny issues and differential issues. I don't think the )6 was built to handle the torque .

She ended up going to a non Subaru dealer shop to get the clutch fixed the SECOND time it went bad and then sold the car.

They wouldn't cover the clutch on warranty and she was good at driving stick, she owned 2 car over 10 years and never had any problems with clutches wearing out so fast.

Yeah I had heard about clutch problems with the 06 and stage 2, but I don't think my mods really have enough power for there to be a problem. I'm taking it in tomorrow afternoon and having them take a look at it. And yes, I'm having the weird squeaking noises too in the 1-2, like half way through the shift it gives me a mechanical "wher!" noise... that started happening maybe 4 months ago

mine went around 20k with a few launches and some spirited driving, but no power mods. the first dealership i took it to accused me of abuse. they would only replace the clutch under warranty if they opened up the tranny to inspect for abnormal wear/damage. if they found me at fault for the burnt clutch, i would have to pay the labor of inspecting the tranny plus the parts and labor for the new clutch (about $2000). i told them to go ahead and inspect the tranny, but the earliest opening would be 2 weeks later.

i made an appointment with another dealer the next day they gave me a new clutch without any fuss.

EHHH you doing somthing wrong if your clutch goes out a 10k!!!!

with running such basic mods... your clutch should not be going out...
my02 has 70,000 miles on thestock clutch/trans/f y wheel !!! no slipping

learn to match revs, double cluch EVERY time you slow down. don't let the rpms hang high & shift into 5th gear once at speed limit. Try not to launch above 3k, if at all. Let the CLUTCH FULLY OUT...don't ride it...ummm yeah

Unless you're towing something, or at the racetrack...there's never any reason to "ride" your clutch pedal. Riding the clutch pedal is almost assuredly the reason it's dead at 10k.
