Distances were under 30 miles, I used Google maps backed up by GPS estimates for "real" mileage. For instance on a 29.3 mile trip my odometer logged 27.9. After I got three trips showing low miles I started compensating for my mpg estimates. I want to check myself on that next time I take a longer, straight line trip.

Speedometer seems spot on accoring to my GPS.

My error on short distance was much higher than over longer distances, which makes sense.

Hello all,

I'm new around here, and have not taken the time to read all 90 pages of this thread, but have caught up on the last couple. I figured I'd add my own observations as just a different data set.

So I picked up my 2012 4 door premium with the standard 16" wheels and CVT on Oct. 12th. Since then I've put on a little over 1600 miles with 95% of that being hwy driving at approximately 7 miles over the speed limit of 55/65 as the case may be on WI's slightly hilly roads. I did try and move the speed around a bit when I was under 1000 miles per the recommendations in the manual and from the dealership.

I previously had a Jetta TDI and got used to the range I could get out of that vehicle, so I don't like filling up much more often then I need to. So I've only had 4 fill ups (latest was today). Overall I'm averaging 31.9 mpg, but that appears to be increasing. I still don't have enough data points to know if that is a true increase, or just it averaging out (30.3 mpg, 32.6 mpg, 31.6 mpg, 33.1 mpg).

Tracked against my phone and iPad's GPS the car is measuring about 3 mph off at hwy speeds. So I assume this is about the same for odometer and internal MPG readings. I reset my trip odometer at each fill up, and have noticed that the internal MPG readings very depending where I am in the tank, It obviously is more extreme when it has less miles to base if off of, then seems to read high in the middle, and then read about right near the end of the tank.

Removing the more restrictive of the two air cleaners has been recommended to me, but I'd like to get a better base line, before I take it out, to actually see how much of a difference it makes.

Well, I hope that info is useful.

It appears that the speedometer is spot on accurate according to many including myself. However there is a discrepancy on the odometer - however it is in your favor so think of it a slightly extended warranty.

The most I've ever seen on HWY was 34MPG. The computer seems to be 1 - 3 MPG off though. I have a 2012 Sport Limited. I also have Thule racks (the bikes in the picture aren't always on!) so that might be contributing to the lower than expected MPG. I will be taking the racks off for ski season, so hopefully it helps.

I've been following this thread since it started. Since I bought my hatchback CVT in April, I've been pretty satisfied with my mileage. I normally drive about 240 miles per week. 2/3 on back roads and 1/3 on highway. My average speed is about 35 and my mpg has been between 31 and 34. Lower with AC in the hot weather and higher when I try. Always a couple of miles less when hand calculated.

For the last month, I have been working away from home. 75% stop and go, many more hills, mostly short trips, 5% highway. I flipped through my meter today. Avg speed 20.5, Avg MPG 26.7. I couldn't believe it. I can't wait to get back home to my normal commute.

My most recent tank was used entirely in city driving in Boston. I got less than 20 MPG. The highway MPG rating is pretty close to what you can get but the city rating seems high... At least for my city driving.

The numbers are from the display. I reset one the trip meters every time I fill up. My results from hand calculating are typically 1 to 2 mpg less than the display. I don't do the calculations every fill up anymore. About 9000 on the odo.

is 26mpg (unadjusted gauge... probably actually 24) normal for almost 100% city driving or is there something wrong here?

Sounds about right for short trips and stop-and-go driving.

The answer is on the window sticker that came with your car (Bold information is quoted right off my window sticker):

CITY MPG 25 (for my 5 Speed Sport, yours may be 1-2 MPG different if you have a CVT)

Expected Range for most drivers 20 to 30 MPG (printed right below the CITY MPG number)

You bought the car new, what does the window sticker say?

I adjusted my Scangauge to match the full tank mpg over a few tankloads on a highway trip and discovered the initial mpg was optimistic by up to 2 or 3 mpg, it consistently matched what my Scangauge said eventually during the tank. Unfortunately what it consistently came back as was 4 or 5 mpg better than actual, and well below my other car that was also rated at 36 mpg highway. I would like to know if the EPA actually tested this car or if they just took the information from the manufacturer. Does anyone know where that information is available? The 27 mpg I got on the highway was well below what the demo vehicle showed when I test drove it (over 35 mpg at 75 mph, flat road, two ways). Obviously the gauge on that one was way off.

When I test drove a 2012 MT sedan with an ecometer, it showed 3mpg better on the freeway compared to my 08 OBS on a back-to-back testing.

There is definitely an improvement over the older model, but the MPG gain seems to be all from the smaller engine (unless you have a CVT).

I've given up on the fact that a Subaru can get good MPG with it's AWD system. The only way to get a reasonably good MPG is to drive 65mph or slower. Any faster and the drivetrain totally works against you. It's depressing to know that a full size minivan carrying 4 adults can get better gas mileage on the freeway going 70+ mph. If I didn't live in the snow/salt-belt, my OBS would have been long gone.

G'luck with your MPG.

Tell me what full size minivan (which means it has V6 engine) gets better MPGs on the freeway going 70 mph. I haven't seen that minivan yet; most would get in the low 20 MPGs in that scenario. My wife's Honda Odyssey gets much worse MPGs than my Impreza, even when I have a car top carrier on the Impreza.

2012 Chrysler Town & Country rented from Enterprise.

Just completed a 1,500 mile trip from MI to NYC and back. 95% freeway. Averaged 26.3 mpg going 70-75 mph the whole way.

Yes, I was shocked that it got such a good gas mileage.

My 2008 OBS is lucky to get over 25.x when going over 70mph. And, mine is bone stock!

Subaru does have diesels available within the US they aren't Imprezas but still diesel powered. I'd personally buy one but I just think they are underpowered for the price.

There is speculation that the digital mpg readout is more accurate then calculating [odo miles/pump gal] due to odometer inaccuracy. Perhaps the digital mpg calcs are calibrated to the epa testing which probably uses their own equipment to calculate miles, gallons, speed?

How many miles per tank is everyone averaging per fill up.

I tend to hover between 320-340 miles and every fill up is around 12 gals...

26-28 mpg

That's better than what I get out of my 02 corolla...

The BEST tank I pulled was about around 410 and that was a lot of HW driving... I'll never see 400 while inside of waldorf

The digital readout has a little glitch in the beginning after a reset, but then goes steadily back toward what it is calibrated at. It reads variably high, up to 2 or 3 mpg, then goes toward a consistent error, unless it's set right. I just checked mine on a 1500 mile trip and it read 4.3 % high at the end of the trip, based on total miles / total gallons, filling the first and last times at the same spot the same way. I checked it against my Scangauge. I don't understand why Subaru can't (or won't) deliver the car with it calibrated. It must be using the OBDII system miles and fuel flow data. I actually got 26.7 mpg running about 75, which is much worse than what the demo vehicle readout said I was getting during the test drive - it said 35 or so at 75. If it was getting the same as my car does, and was 2 mpg high after a reset it was actually set to read about 25% higher than actual - either from the factory or by the dealer.

I've had my 2012 Ltd. Sedan for about 6 months and have just over 6000 miles on the car. What I have learned concerning gas mileage is the car can return EPA stated mileage, but you must drive conservatively. If you drive aggressively it's amazing how the mileage declines. I regularly get 32 to 35 MPG but I keep my foot out of the accelerator in all but highway merging situations. My driving is about 60% highway at 60 to 70 MPH and about 40% backroads with minimal stop lights. Recently, I intentionally changed my driving style to aggressive for about a half a tank of gas, and my mileage dropped to the mid 20's. I don't know why driving aggressively has such a negative impact, but my guess is a combination of the small engine and CVT transmission. Drive sensibly and you will be very happy with this car. Drive aggressively and you will wish you bought the WRX. Just my 2 cents.

2012 Impreza, Manual, Sedan
4949 Miles (est. 70% city)
202.67 Gallons Purchased
24.42 MPG Calculated

Even after having the car aligned I still don't like it on the highway in wind, so I haven't driven much more than 1500 Miles at 65MPH to 75MPH. I probably have a much higher than average number of short trips, but I'm still a bit surprised to have the average calculate below the city rating based on my previous car.
