Blinking CEL After Startup; Disappeared After Re-Start
This morning when I started my WRX I think I let off the ignition a little early (RIGHT before the engine would have started). It's hard to explain, but a couple miliseconds after I let off the ignition the engine "popped" on, seemingly from a detonation after the starter motor had quit. The engine started fine but the CEL went on and started blinking. I then turned my car off and then on again and the blinking CEL was gone. A couple questions:
(1) What is the difference between a blinking and solid CEL? (I meant to check to see if this was in the manual, but I forgot to do so before I left my car today). (2) Any idea what the CEL could have been caused by? It's gone now and it hasn't come back. I've only ever gotten CELs twice before: once I got a blinking CEL for about 2 seconds as I was driving in 3rd gear; I let off the gas and then it went away for good. I never got a blinking CEL again. I also got a recurring solid CEL for a day at the beginning of the winter due to running lean (I think it was a bad tank of gas coupled with the change to cold weather). My car/mods: '02 WRX ~12000 miles TurboXS Stage II Stock boost (at the time of the CEL) 94 Octane Fuel, quarter tank Any incite would be appreciated...

Blinking CEL means misfire. There is a thread around here somewhere on it.

A blinking CEL light is not just a misfire but that is most likely the code that you got.
A blinking CEL means that there is something very wrong with your car and you should pullover and turn off the engine. A solid CEL means that something is not right but it's still ok for you to drive. A question for you, do you have a utec or unichip with your stage two? If you have a utec and your cel flashes and then goes away, that is most likely the utec telling you that it is sensing knock. Regardless, you should go to an auto store and have them pull your codes just to find out what they are. Even if the cel is off the computer should still save them in its memory. |
