intake plumbing
I was looking closely under the hood at the intake plumbing of my '01 GT and it sure is cheesy.
Anyone else notice that? MVB

Mine's plasticky - no cheese in sight .
I happen to think it's quite good. Better than picking air up from behind the turn indicator, or the right front wheel, or from near the ground, or from the engine bay itself. Plasticky it may be but there's no chance of picking up warm air directly from the engine area. With the front of the air intake mounted directly at the front of the car and quite high up, you are guaranteed of a constant supply of the cold stuff. If you want over-engineered, try a Mercedes (but the *design* will be no better I assure you). You can blame the length of the intake tract, and the heating of air as it travels through the tract, on the fact that the air cleaner housing has the air entry port at the rear, not the front, and the fact that the air cleaner (and throttle body) sits just about right on top of the engine. |

Some strategically placed duct tape and the removal of the plastic guard on the hood net a smoother intake flow w/o warranty issues.
I taped over the 'appendages' for sound deadening that branch off the main intake. Coupled with the removal of that silly thing on the hood, the car is the slightest bit louder and feels like it breaths a little better at higher rpm. Nothing to write home about mind you, but its a small improvement. Heck I was thrilled and impressed that FHI bothered with a detail like that. Mike2000GT |

The box is still in the car. If you unscrew the intake and lift it up, you'll see that the box is a separate piece. Tape over the opening of the box as well as the other tube that comes off the intake. Thats all I did. Make sure the tape is not visible and vola... no warrenty issues.
Nothing complicated and the system is all intact... just air doesnt flow in and out of the silencers. Hope that helps. Mike2000GT |
