Default Modifying tacho readout

As the title says, does anyone know how you can electronically make the tacho read lower than correct? ie Engine speed is 4000rpm but tacho reads 3000 rpm. I was thinking a resistor I would switch into the circuit or something like that.

Any one have any ideas?

The tach uses a pulsed waveform generated by the ECU that varies with RPM. You'd have to build a circuit to intercept and modify that signal, not easy at all and far more involved than just a resistor.
