Nah I had it cut locally for $40 after my Dremel broke haha.

Note: I successfully got my moms outback key work with this project. But if I'm parked next to her it will open and lock both cars. Any idea how to erase a car from a transmitter?

The cars will hold 5 codes. If you load more than 5, then the first one is deleted (first in, first out). So you'll have to find the codes for her OEM remotes and then reprogram those over and over until it pushes the one you don't want out of the list.

Anyone else having trouble keeping the transponder in place in the switchblade shell?

I took apart the Legacy key and my valet key today and started moving the pieces over to the switchblade housing and everything fits great except the transponder chip will not stay in place in the switchblade housing and keeps falling out and rattling around...

Also, does anyone know if you have to have the key cut before you can program the remote to work? I was going to try to program the remote tonight but the key won't be cut until later this week.

Thanks!

You can program the remote alone. Just use a working key.

You actually don't use the remote at all while programming it. Just your lock/unlock buttons on the door itself.

Unless you're taking it to the dealership so they can program it.

i think someone (ben?) had a similar issue with the chip. you'll need to find a way to secure the chip better. dab of hot glue, or stuff some foam in between. get creative just don't damage the chip.

and no you don't need to cut the key before you program. i programmed my brand new uncut legacy key and it works just fine.

Update on mine.
I purchased a housing from eBay that I liked.
Unfortunately it only has openings for 3 buttons (does not have one for panic).
I drilled out an opening, but it looks horrible. So I ordered another and will remove the panic button from the remote itself when the new housing comes in.

I've never used panic, nor will I in the future.

Thanks a lot for your write up xluben. Great mod.

Pic added. You can see where the panic button area was cut. I did a terrible job with it (beer did not help), but once the new housing gets here ill cu the panic button out of the remote for a clean 3 button look.

Yep. It looks like I never got around to finishing the DIY at the beginning of this post. I need to do that. You do need to secure the chip. A bit of hot glue would work great. I actually ended up using a cotton ball. It was kind of goofy trying to jam it in there, but it seems to have worked great.

Correct. I just wrote the number on a piece of paper and then programmed it. Tested it with the remote afterwards.

Thanks for the update. It doesn't look too bad. If you're interested in one of the nice shells, send me an e-mail!

I was able to get the transponder to stay in place without anything holding it. Just gotta find the right angle.

Hey Ben,

Any tips for programming the remote?

I'm about to go home and try it.

Read the instructions all the way through before you start. Most of the words are just explaining what to do if you screw up. Maybe write down just the steps for if you do it right. It's really pretty simple once you do it.

print out the instructions, read them through, then highlight the steps that actually require your action. you'll find the 3/4 page of instructions shortened into about 1 paragraph.

also have your 8 digit code handy.

Ok so maybe I can't follow directions but I can't even get my car past step 2 of those instructions... I've probably tried turning the key 50 plus times and I haven't heard one tone...

you just have to do it quickly. The beep confirmation that you get is the same one that sounds when you lock/unlock your car. with the remote.

also remember to leave the key in the ON position after you do it the 15th time.

Thanks! Unfortunately my dimensions for the key housing are a bit different, so I'd probably have to get the key cut if I did that. I will consider it within 2 months or so, since I plan to make another key as well.

Ok so I finally figured it out. I was not turning the key nearly fast enough. I think you have to do it in less than 10 seconds not 15...

Either way, it worked and I now have the Legacy key programmed to work with my car. All I need to do now is have the switch blade housing cut and I will be golden.

Thanks for the help!

Yes, you have to turn the key faster than you'll originally think is possible, LOL.

I'll try to finish updating the first posts in this thread. One of these days...

Why not? It should be even easier for your car.

So I got the cheapo flip housing on eBay before I ordered xlubens. I have several complaints about it. Where should I start? The housing is held together by one screw, which makes it feel cheap. The key is not centered which means it won't fit all the way in the keyhole without slightly folding the key. The chip compartment is big and it jingles around until it falls out. I had to wrap it with tape to hold it in. Lastly, it's too thick (that's what she said)

On the plus side, it only costed $15 to cut it, so when the good one gets here I won't be out too much.

Oh and I grabbed one of those key fobs on eBay that wasn't very descriptive of what vehicle it was for. Got it for less than $30 and it worked. Score!

So far...
$15 for cheap shell housing
$30 for legacy keyfob combo
$15 to cut the key
$25 for xlubens shell
Still going to need the new one cut, so another $15 is needed.

I think this is not bad at all. I would have paid WAY more from the dealer if it was a factory option.

Really? Thought I read it was harder due to the keys not being laser cut. I'll re read and more than likely order one from you tonight if it's still going on. I'll re read when I'm not on my iPhone. Too much damn scrolling.

Read more. The 2012 Impreza key won't work on the WRX because of the remote. For your car this takes a flip shell and $2 to cut a new blade. That's all.
