Default 93 Impreza L upgrades and newbie questions

I'm looking to upgrade some basic, beginner type parts for my Impreza, which would probably be the exhaust and suspension. Where would be the best place to look for those parts for a 93? If I do an internet search I usually only turn up WRX or RS parts; I'm sure there's got to be quite a few decent companies that sell stuff for the 93. Also, is there some sort of book or manual that would help explain all the different types of exhaust and suspension systems. We're talkin really basic here; I've worked on cars before, but don't know too many specifics. Or is the only really solution to keep posting everytime I have a question?

Just a quick example: I found this 1993 Impreza R-134a Retrofit Kit to change from R-12 and I have no idea what that is. How do you all find out what all these things are? Man, I'm really exposing my ignorance here...

Swap a 2.2 in there, and then start to add mods...

The r-12 to r-134 conversion is a freon conversion for your A/C system, won't make you go any faster, but will keep you from making a bigger hole in the Ozone...

Hi:
Have you searched these forums? There is a lot here. Is this car AWD? If it is you could, and I would, improve the handling first. Get the rear transverse links and sway bar mounts out of a wreck, if it has rear discs grab the brake assembly too. Then swap it in, there is plenty posted here on how to do it already. Then get a 19-20mm or bigger rear sway bar. I went with KYB AGX struts and Eibech springs, a great combo and relativly inexpensive. Then get rid of the 14" rims. WRX rims with tires are always for sale in the private sale forum. These rims with the stock tires will be a big improvement over what you have, even if the stock tires arn't the best. Then you could swap in front WRX brakes. At some point get Whiteline swaybar end links. This is what I did. I admit that you could do better if you want to spend more money, but this will give you a pretty quick car. Of course if the car needs an engine now, or an exhaust system, do it first.

if the car is AWD, and is a dual port 1.8L (look under the car, and the collectors on the manifold running up into the engine should use 3 bolts to attatch to the heads, and should be kind of fat and '8' shaped), you can bolt almost ANYTHING from a GC8 RS on to the car.

if it's FWD, the main differences are that your rear suspension is totally different (so AWD struts, control arms, rear brakes, etc. are totally different), and the flange on your cat section of the exhaust is different, so a catback exhaust won't bolt up without modification, or replacing the cat section (preferably with a hi-flow aftermarket one ).

bah... dont listen to these guys...

you can do anything you want to the car...
FWD or AWD... 1.8 or 2.2

exhaust -
add any exhaust you want... granted you may have to have some pipe work/exhaust hangers custom fabbed....
so find a muffler you like, and take it to a real exhaust tuner shop...

suspension -
my AWD DMS coil overs (suspension)fit JUST FINE on my FWD Impreza...

it can all be done, takes a bit of research, time to learn what's what... and $$$....

if you have any questions, feel free to email me...
i've modified the 1.8 FWD'er to the hilt

Jaime,

The queen of the 1.8! Congrats on all of your recent good press... You are bringing some great publicity to the sport of Rallying. Thanks.

So let's not forget who's always saying how "gutless" their car is with its 110hp. Not to say that you don't whoop on the competition (we know you do) with it, just that it's slightly underpowered.

There are plenty of ways to sqeeze power from the EJ18, it's just easier (and cheaper) to start with a 2.2 for a foundation powerplant IMHO.

The DMS suspension costs more than a well modded 2.2 & a KYB AGX set up, if the guy is on a budget...

When is your WRX wagon going to be done? Won't have to worry about being underpowered in that one. It would be very cool to see a wagon out there. Are you going to run in PGT, OPEN or Group N? Can't wait to see the new ride at Doo Wops.

1.8's can be quick...just get rid of that pesky rear driveshaft, differential, center diff, heavier AWD rear suspension, etc...

between Jamie and i, i think we've got what does and doesn't fit down...
for the most part, everything is interchangeable, there are just a few little interesting/annoying quirks here and there.

Take your time, learn everything you can. Spend your money where ever makes you happiest (handling, engine perf, looks, audio, etc) it is afterall your car. I, personally, would be thinking about building a custom turbo kit for that 1.8, as well as tightening up the suspension and getting better rubber on the ground. Look around the club, decide what you want to improve first then look at your bank account and decide if its feasible. Being a novice to cars you must factor in labor and/or broken bits and pieces to the cost of any mod. Just learn and make informed decisions and you should be quite happy.

First thing you need to do is get some WRX rims/tires - you should be able to pick up a set for about $300 or less. I guarantee it'll be a big improvement over what's on the car now, but the larger rolling diameter will make your car a little slower. This can be corrected by replacing the 55 series tires with 45 series.

I'd also recommend picking up a set of front WRX brakes. The stock brakes are definitely inadequate at stopping an L.
Single piston calipers/9.4" rotors vs. double piston calipers/11.4" rotors...yeah no contest.

As for an exhaust...I've thought about this, but would rather save the money for the ol' engine swap. I'm holding off on the power for now, because I don't have the money to pour into the 1.8L. I'll enjoy my gas mileage for now.

Buying used parts from WRX/RS owners is a good way to start modifying your car. Just about everything fits (with some exceptions) and it'll be tons cheaper and better than your stock parts.

you should pick up a WRX rear sway bar. it made a really enjoyable diffrence in the way my car (my97 OBS) handles. although now im thinkin i shoulda got the thicker sedan one.
