PWN3D Heavy smokers share A/C and we need to move! How much $ will it cost?

I just moved in all my crap to an apartment with my wife and I now have to move all the crap out! Basically because the owner of the rental failed to tell us that the people that live under us are heavy indoor smokers and the air conditioning system is the same for BOTH OF THE APARTMENTS! . Now I have no help and little time to get all our crap to storage and stay with the in-laws for a few months. We will get a moving company this time to do the moving but we don't know what are typical charges this will cost. Anyone have a lot of moving experience who can help? All our stuff is basically in boxes or disassembled and we do not have big furniture besides a sofa. ..TIA

Get the land lord to pay for moving expenses and punitive damages. Call Cochran.

So is that a common question for moving into an apartment?

"Sir, will all my stuff reek with the smell of cheap smoke due to cost-cutting procedures that link the AC systems of this building to another apartment occupied by chain smokers?"

Actually, AC is right. And before you move into another place, be sure to ask the following:

Does the toilet shoot water up when you flush?
Is the electrical work up to code?
Does the oven constantly leave gas?
Will the garbage man rape my wife?
Do the neighbors deal drugs out of their apartment?
Do you regularly key your tenants' cars?

For a local move you'll probably be charged between $70 and $100 an hour (truck and a couple of guys). If most of your stuff is boxed up, you don't have much furniture, and you're just putting it in storage it should only a few hours depending on how far they have to drive to get to you (a lot of companies charge for that) and how far they have to drive to the storage location.

is it a common thing to TELL renters without them asking?

oh, by the way, even though i know it's none of my business . . . the people downstairs smoke like russians in a breadline."

if it's so important to you that you're packing up and moving, yeah, it's something you should have asked about.

Hey man, who said we didn't ask? The guy TOLD US the smoke oder was because the ex-tenant was a smoker but he would fix the problem by painting and cleaning the carpets and even replacing them. if you don't know the whole story and have nothing to say to help then shut the hell up and move on.

well maybe you ought to GIVE US the whole story instead of making us fill in between the lines, sis.

or, you could do what other married people do and buy your own home. no smokey downstairs neighbors that way. but i'm sure there's part of the story there that i don't know about, too.

Call the board of health and have them send someone to your place to check it out.

If they decide that it is a danger to you they will make the landlord fix the problem.

my family used to own some apartment buildings and you'd be surprised at the tiny little nit picky things they can find. you should definately give em a call before you move out.

Or you could answer the question that was asked instead of making up your own question to answer.

We can't even sleep in there. We don't want to go through all that. Plus we haven't signed a lease because the owner didn't show up the day we moved in so we are off the hook. Thanks for the idea though, I think we will call the Board anyway because the place really is a danger to live in.

Yeah, I think the local authorities would probably require him to modify the AC system so it's no longer a problem, though I don't think he has to let you move out or pay for your move...

Did you, like, ASK the landlord yet what he'll do to fix it?

I assumed that you did since your answer didn't really fit the question of how much money moving would cost.

in all seriousness, you signed a lease and you have ALL the power in this situation. you could move out and pay rent into escrow until they have the problem fixed. don't give up. tenants have WAY more power than landlords.

Im serious about the board of health thing.

We had a woman in one of our building that said she was sick because of mold in the walls. she called the board and they came in and ripped the place apart looking for it. there wasn't any of course cuz she was just a crazy bitch but they did a very thorough search and checked everything in the place.

I'd say having second hand smoke pumped into your apartment would be a serious health risk worthy of them checking it out.

We said we are moving out and he basicaly didn't care. He had the chance to fix it in the past because the guy that lives down stairs does HVAC for a LIVING! And wanted to fix the system but the owner refused because of $. So the anal orifice knew the situation but said nothing even though we told him smoke was a problem.

I don't think he has to let you move out or pay for your move
I agree..
