Removal of exhaust heat shields, bad or no problem?
My heat shields make my Suby sound like a car less than it is. Has anyone removed thier shields from the manifold back or which ones have you removed? I know it shouldn't be but is there any adverse effect of removing the shields?

When I had my ej25, I had all the heat shields torched off because they were rattling so badly. Just don't park on the grass

I've cut or ground off at least half the heatshields, because of incessant rattling.
I try not to park on tall grass. -Brian |

my stock header ones were rattling.. all other are fine.. wasn't really concerned because I did replace headers about month later.. now nothing rattles.. there are still all under the body and on the catalityc conv... but there i had to re-do the clamps and replace bolts..

the exhaust guy that did my muffler tried to weld the shield on to the pipe and pretty much just put a nice hole in my mid-pipe.
If the bracket holding it on is rusted, you wouldn't really be able to weld it to the pipe too well. You could try though. |

I was able to stop the rattling by clamping the shields down to the pipe with some universal exhaust u-clamps.

I'm using stock dual cats and yes.. I still have heat shield on it.. these suckers can get really hot.. much hotter than exhaust pipes... Headers - borla the one i use, nope don't have shield since isn't recommended by mfg. rest of the car i have only heat shield on underbody of the car, not on the pipes... |

I have heat shield rattles on mine too. Will removing the heat shields not damage the the steering rack rubber boots above the pipe?

Well, I tried the universal U clamps and it did not work for me. Guess I will just remove the shields.

I thought my heat shield was rattling too, but upon inspection with the car on a hydraulic lift it was one of the exhaust clips that had broken in 2 and was rattling up against the cat converter. Got it welded it back together, and now it's great. Just thought I'd pass that along...

I found that creative use of pipe clamps solved the rattle for me ... for a while. I've got to crawl under there and tighten one of them again.

I went under the car and tapped around with a rubber mallet and found an off sounding one. I took it off and it's nice and quite now.
