Pull the upper heater core hose off until coolant runs out, that should get rid of any air bubble

Sounds like a thermostat to me, the fact that one side of the radiator is hot quickly sounds like its not opening. After warming up, If the bottom radiator hose isn't as hot as the top then its most likely a thermostat. Easy to replace at least, test it by dropping it in a pot of hot water and see if it opens before the water boils, or if it opens at all.

Thanks yea I'll check that. Don't thermostats fail open though I thought? It still seems like it is getting warm TOO quickly(assuming the gauge is accurate and my hand gauge is accurate). By that I mean, to get up to temp within 5 mins of only idling seems abnormal, and theoretically until it is up to temp I don't think the thermostat should be opening anyways right?
I guess I'll see what I can figure out, thanks for the ideas guys. Ben |

My car would run fine unless I drove at over 4k for any distance or rev the engine at operating temp then it would just force all the fluid out of the radiator through the overflow or erupt like a geyser out of the open radiator cap hole.

Well I did some work on my car today. I actually originally came down to get the RS running for my daily driver but my car luck strikes again. Once I had swapped a new motor into the RS I discovered an oil leak out of what was likely the oil pump o-ring and crank seal. Since the engine had a warranty and they were going to cover most of it I decided to have the dealership do it so ti could be done in a day. Well I noticed oil on the back of the engine crossmember as well and was concerned the rear main seal was bad as well.
I took it to the dealer and they basically said the rear baffle was likely leaking. This means all my work swapping the engine was for nothing and it would have to come back out so I said don't do anything. So, now I'm in the situation I didnt' want to be in, getting colder out and no good DD for winter. I may have to buy something else and just sell the RS but I really don't want to since the body is rust free and I wanted to do a swap in the future. So, I decided to a little work on the legacy to see if by some miracle I could get that figured out and just drive that. I didn't really do much work but I let the car warm up and the fans don't turn on, it went to 220 F before I shut it off. The upper and lower radiator hose did get warm so it seems like the thermostat is ok but it's still uncertain. I just don't get why the fans don't turn on but the gauge works and I was watching the coolant temp rise on a OBD 2 scanner so that info must be getting to the ecu. The fans also turn on with the green connectors connected so I have no idea what the F the issue is. I put the front bumper on and put the fogs in since I'm pretty sure I won't need to access that stuff for diagnostics. I also put in the newer door cards I got and door speakers just to make some progress. I partly want to pull the dash again but when I tightened the SMJ plug the bolt snapped...again my luck is amazing so I don't know if I can separate it without a lot of work. I'll try and figure some things out tomorrow but prob won't get much accomplished. Anyways, here is a photo for fun haha. Ben |

I'm really damn impressed by how much work you really do on these cars. I don't think I could ever say to myself "Oh, I'll just pull the whole dashboard out just to make sure..."
Maybe I'm not as aggressive as you but damn. Keep it up. By the way I was just wondering how you were doing emotionally about the relationship. I don't mean to bring up bad thoughts, but just wondering if you're doing ok. |

I spoke with a friend last (Mike from PIA) and he said to use the accessport to see if the ecu is telling the fans to turn on or not. Someone just posted that at idle with the A/C off is when the engine is allowed to run the hottest, however 220 still is higher than they said it should come on, not to mention my gauge was at nearly 3/4 to hot so obviously that is not correct. So I'll probably hook the AP up and see what is happening. Ben |

During my escapades, I ran into a problem with the fans myself, when I used the stock ECU to control the fans, it would never turn on, so I rewired the fan relays to work through the Autronic. Wanna know the root cause.... LOL
Anyways, even though the NA Subaru Temp sensors look the same between the NA Legacy GT and the STI, they are completely different. They are both 3 wire types but the STI one didn`t work properly with the NA Fans. Root cause: STI Water Temp sensor not working with NA ECU. In your case, I don`t know which ecu you`re using or water temp sensor you`re using, but it`s a simple thing to test. |

If you just need to get a car on the road, you could pretty easily rig a toggle switch and a relay from Radio Shack to run the fans and just manually control the temperature. Obviously that's not the final answer, but if that's the last thing you're waiting on to get it going, it'll work for the short term.

Ok so I looked at the diagrams again, the relay setups are different.
here is the STi: here is the Baja: So it appears that the Sti is setup for dual speeds where the baja is a single speed for individual fans. This poses a problem I think because when the ecu is telling the fans to run "low" it is only having fan relay 1 triggered, and then on high it triggers relay 2 and I assume turns off 1. But the baja needs both 1 and 2 to be on simultaneously to run both fans I think at a single speed. I am running a Sti ecu with sti fans but baja turbo wiring. I know people who have run sti ecu's on their baja turbos so maybe the solution is to get baja turbo fans but I don't think the fan itself is different, as the plugs are identical so I theoretically should already be doing that. Can anyone tell me what to do here? I don't get what the switch is between pins 30 and 33 on the baja diagram are doing? Just tonight I swapped the Sti A/C compressor out with my legacy one, so they are interchangeable for anyone wondering in the future. I also feel like my intercooler is sitting up too high that it will hit the hood if it's fully closed and I rev the engine/drive. In looking at baja turbos with STi TMIC's they seem to sit lower so I'm wondering if they have different intercooler supports that are a bit lower or if the throttle body is in a different location(which I doubt). thanks Ben |

A little update: I discovered that the relay holder has wires going to all 5 slots for the "fan mode relay" and there is only a 4 prong relay in there. So I am HOPING this is my issue. I asked someone with a baja turbo to confirm it needs a 5 pole relay by taking a photo and getting me a part number.
If this is the case I think the car will be able to be driven and I would only have the illumination issue left, assuming I can also turn on my heat and such once I hook up the thermo/evap switch haha. I'm sure it won't be that straight forward though. Ben |

Thanks to BenHart21, problem confirmed:
I ordered up two relays just to eliminate the issue of one being bad...this is what you do after having so many problems and your project going a year overdue. I also ordered a brand new integrated unit just to eliminate that possible problem as well. I hope this sovles the fan issue, then it will be one issue left and the car should be good to go. The issue of the TMIC I thought of the possibility I may have a jdm one that slightly larger? I'll have to try the one off the 05 STi I have and compare the sizes to see, that would be a nice surprise as well and make the fix fairly simple. I won't get to test this weekend but the weekend of the 5th I will. Ben |

Small but lame update. I picked up the relay and new integrated unit, so I am a bit poorer but hopefully a lot closer to being finished. I am fairly confident at least the relays will solve the fan issue.
The good news is my friend Jeff will be in town this coming weekend and we are planning to troubleshoot the illumination so I'm hoping he will be able to help me figure it out in fairly short order. Ben |

Be careful about putting any extra interior lighting load on the integrated unit. The integrated relays are very small and the extra load of the additional interior lights in the LGT killed my WRX unit after a few hours. I swapped all the interior lighting to LED (much lower power usage) and swapped in a new unit, everything was happy after that.

Yeah that's what I thought too, but the BD has door lights that weren't present on the GD and I think that was enough extra draw to fry the relay. I'm guessing the BE has more stock interior lights than the GD also.

I am more annoyed than excited right now but:
Apparently don't underestimate the stupidity of the installer. I wasted nearly a year of my life tracking down a problem that didn't even exist. The issue was that when I attached the dash harness onto the dash and snapped it in where it should have been it put two plugs to the center of the dash where the head unit/hvac goes which is away from where they need to go. Finally looked at the diagrams and looked at the plugs and saw that the two unplugged plugs under the dash needed to plug into the two plugs that were in the center of the car. They definitely don't easily reach, either way I should have looked way before this, what's annoying is the fact that I feel like I had looked before and said to myself "i'll try that next time" then a lot of time passed and I forgot about it. The gauges still don't dim for some reason but they at least work. I can now start to put the dash and such back together and should be able to drive the car. It will be too much to do today but assuming I can get down this next weekend I should be able to have the car finished and driving after next weekend. Ben |

After soldering wires back into place the gauges do in fact dim and work properly so I'm pretty close at this point.
I have to wire in the reverse and neutral switch, and the plugs on the front abs sensors, try and adjust the TMIC/create a shroud for it and wire in another plug on the interior then I should be able to put the interior back together. There are some other miscellaneous things to do as well but I hope it can all get finished. I do have a CEL for the EVAP for the gas tank which I think may just be due to a difference in ecu's so I'll have to look at that, if it's no big deal I'll probably just turn it off. I ordered somewhat of a finishing touch for the car, a Sound Ordnance 8" underseat subwoofer from crutchfield. It has received good reviews and I know I def want some bass but don't really feel like fiberglassing a spare wheel sub box again so this should do the job nicely. Hopefully I can take it on it's maiden voyage this weekend and not have any real issues but that probably won't happen haha. The actual next big test will just be going back down this weekend and attempting to start it up.
