The only real problem is that it doesn't work now. E.g. jack your truck up so the bumper is at my window level, and in a perfect world your insurance is going to be pretty insane. Maybe if insurance companies automatically got billed for $6.1M for every death one of their policyholders caused, there would be more action.
Just because that's the statistical average of what people make in their life over the number of people doesn't mean that is actually everyone's value. Considering the financial wealth distribution of this country, it is very likely that whoever dies in an accident is worth way less.

Also, people can value their lives at whatever they want, it's called life insurance .

Otherwise I agree with insurance should punish more to recover costs.

How much is your kid's life worth? And how can you know until that life has been concluded naturally?

That's your own life. This conversation is about liability.

There was such a OMG WE ARE ALL GOING TO LOSE BUYERS push in that same time period to offer MP3 and iPod capability in their vehicles, why not the rear camera? Especially knowing a law would eventually mandate it?

Here we are, 6 years later, and this has been spun into the BAD GOVERNMENT FORCING THIS ON US crap polarizing issue.

Do we need more polarization in this completely insane culture? I guess we do.

However manufacturers charges thousands for this upgrade as part of a package. Think of all the margin they are losing by not implementing this now... Profits before morality.
Yup. This is pretty much a non-issue.

The more prevalent issue is that rear visibility in the vast majority of cars is complete dog**** now, making the rear view mirror more of a decoration than anything. Couple that with numb steering feel that makes it so you can never really get a feel for how big your car is (or isn't) and you've got a recipe for a lot of ****ed-up cars that's comparatively cheap to fix.

I would disagree with your last paragraph...declining usefullness of rear view mirrors is not a more prevalent issue than teaching your kids not to play behind a running car.

I think your choice of words could be better.

As could yours.

It happens thousands of times a year, and it's usually very young children, on the order of 2 or 3 years old. And they're usually not playing behind the car, but doing something nefarious like trying to say hi to mom or dad.

Thousands of times a year we flatten kids

I hvae a 5 year old and an 11 month old. Both boys. They know never to be around a running car alone. EVER. My 11 month old is not an issue as he is not a functional Biped yet. And when my 5 year old is out playing, guess what I am watching him. When mommy comes home, guess what, he is not allowed to run up to a moving car to say hello.

Your example is total BS.

Where is the proof that kids get backed over THOUSANDS of times a year. I will wait right here while you aimlessly search or just ignore the request.

We have called much less an OMG crisis in this country...but kids getting squashed by the THOUSANDS does not even make a headline. Interesting.

Or was that just a made up number.

Natural selection sucks and makes lots of people really really sad, but it's nature and she's a bitch. L2Accept.

kids and cars .org says 50 kids are injured a week in the US due to cars moving in reverse.

2 a week are fatal. While bad, hardly a crisis. Parenting and being aware of what is around you is the solution.

Being a harsh realist who understands 1) luck plays a part and 2) humans don't matter to the universe and thus coming across as an ******* (though I'm really not) does not mean I'm not statistically better than your average human in terms of the things that matter most for surviving:

I'm more physically capable
I'm more mentally capable
I'm better looking

All of which goes to say, from a natural selection standpoint, I'm more likely to survive. Emphasis on *likely*.

Probably, but now that I mention it I think "bad rear visibility" is, in fact, more prevalent than "kids playing around moving vehicles." ¯\_(***12484;)_/¯

Sorry, but being "nice" doesn't factor into survival, and backup cameras are fixing a non-real problem.

You must not be aware of what "average" looks like

And don't get me started, I've got plenty more "gems" where that one came from . There is no such thing as a serious/normal picture with me, and I plan to keep it that way, even through wedding pictures! Wife desires be damned!

Thanks for the first aid advice...not needed.

Good to see you out of PP for a while, I knew you would show up...in fact I predicted it.

If more people would teach their kids not to play around running cars then the issue goes away. The rear view mirror can be restored to its glorious place of usefullness and honor in the middle of the windshield.

Indeed it is. Here's one that should turn Xan on.

Gotta love wool clothing getting accidentally washed. At least that accident is better than accidentally backing over a kid. I've still managed to avoid that one some how. I can't take credit for the pristine apartment room, unfortunately. That is my girlfriend's apartment before we moved in together.
