03 WRX Track CAR - Quick-Release Front Bumper Questions
I'm looking for hardware / setup recommendations for a quick-release front bumper assembly for my 03 WRX.
The car will now be mostly a track / hillclimb car, since I recently purchased an enclosed trailer with a drop-down rear door/ramp. Having a quick-release front bumper would make it easier getting the car into and out of the trailer by myself without any damage. Right now I have to take off the front bumper assy to get the car out of the trailer without the front bumper rubbing and potentially damaging the C-West bumper and possibly the fender. If I have help, I can load/unload it by using wood blocks under the front wheels to get clearance but since I can't always count on the help, I figured the quick-release setup would be the way to go. It also makes servicing the front end easier. Any Hardware / set-up recommendations or installation tutorials would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I use Dzeus fittings and fabricated some stand-offs that come off the frame rail to the side of the bumper and then against the beam itself. (modified of course)

You can use Dzus 1/4 Turn latches, or toggle latches.
I've got some pictures I can post but I'm at work right now. check out pegasusautoracing.com for them, search "latches" and they'll come up |

Same form Pegasus get Areo Catch 3s for use on the side up to the fenders, then dzeuz across the low part of the grill into the bumper beam.
Old pic with the dzeus's in the grill and on the side. Recently chaged to the Areo Catch 3s on the side to the fender no pic though. |

I've seen these in action and after using dezus before, I wouldnt hesitate to get these if they were in the budget. http://www.quik-latch.com/quik-latch-mini-latch.html

On the TIC car, two clamps to lock the corners to the fender (more like locate) but the bumper is really held on by the undertary. Just an idea, if you're going with an undertray.

Right now I have an aluminum skid plate but not an undertray secured to the bumper (yet).
I'll probably go with Dzus fasteners for the horizontal mounting on the bumper beam and clamps for both bumper to fender locations. Great input so far. Thanks guys! |

The push-button idea for the side fenders is more aerodynamic than the clamp type side retainers and it's more idiot-proof than the 1/4 turn Dzeus, which, I imagine, could be easily over-torqued and broken. Last edited by skimobile; 12-15-2012 at 07:30 PM. |

No, not really, you feel very clearly when then 1/4 turn is all the way, it gets easier just before you cant turn it any more, and then you can turn it any more. Its just a pain to get them lined up and to get the fastener to start to engages sometimes.

On a bugeye you have to remove the grill first. I just kept my JDM Grill mounted with 2 of the push fasteners into the headlights.
My bumper was held on solely with the latches into the fenders at the wheel wells. All of the other push fasteners were deleted. Protex ProLatch Jr Draw Latches |
