The same family that drives their car to 130 mph to see that the fuel consumption is ~5mpg - after depleting some of the oil because it read "over" on the dip-stick? How many of us have done that? Having had my "rant", there really appears to be a problem that Subaru must address. Thankfully, I have not experienced the problem.

The 130mph was on the previous oil change. The movement from the full mark to halfway between on the dipstick happened on its second fill of oil since it left the factory. I drained the factory fill at 1200, then I drove it harder. The dealer then changed the oil at 3750, then at 7500. It was just before 7500 I got the low oil light. I think it was 7200, but can't recall atm.

Wow I didn't even know that our car can go that fast! The dealer filled my oil past the full mark. I think they put an even 6 qts in. My suby tech friend said it is fine, no need to empty some oil.

One thing is sure- I'm not the only one who's lost a quart.

And I called soa- three times- to find out how high on the dipstick is acceptable. They said to take it to the dealer and promised they'd get back to me about the correct gauging of the oil. They never did. You act as though I didn't take every step along the way. The dealer chose to drain out some of the oil. It was REALLY high. When I did my change at 1200 with a new filter, I poured EXACTLY 5.3 quarts and it was about 1/4" above the top dot. That's why I was alarmed when the dealer put in an appreciable amount more than I did.

Good to know! That's more of an answer than I've gotter out of Subaru.
It frustrated the hell out of me that I watched my dipstick religiously, but was told by Bill Bryan I wasn't doing my part. Well- they knew I was. But honestly if soa wants us to "do our part" they could at least give us an accurate gauge. The proper dipstick reading for these cars is still a bit of a gray area$
Fwiw- the car does VERY well at speeds of 110+.
I remember at least a few other members posting about 120-130mph top speeds. I make no apologies for that. I like to see how fast any car/bike I own is. Pretty sure others do as well.
The handling and ride are why I'm hoping like hell it was a fluke with the oil. Fun car to drive on a twisy country road. Especially on dirt.

I changed my oil for first time yesterday 5140 miles. No oil consumption up to this point. I drained oil on ramps approx 5 quarts removed. Replaced with 5 quarts Subaru oil and filter Checked on level surface approx 1/-8 inches below full mark.

Drove car rechecked now at full mark. Now this is new for me in 25 years of changing oil. I waited 6 hours rechecked still full. I will recheck in morning once car has completely cooled but IMO is will probably remain full.

Now has anyone else experience this?

I would recommended if possible change your own oil if not check behind dealers.

I've had my low oil light come on 4 times now. First at just around 4000km, then at 7000. Had my oil change done at 10900. Low oil light came on at 14000, and then again at 17000, included was a squeaky seat. I love this car, but I hate the oil consumption. Subaru has started an oil consumption report. We will see if the low oil light comes on again before the next scheduled oil change.

It sounds like you and I have the same car, Gregorz.

yea sounds like it, has Subaru done anything for you yet?
My squeaky seat is recent so im just going to tell them when I go for my next oil change.
I wonder if my oil light will go on before that scheduled time? probably
Weird thing was when my Low Oil light came on last, I drove to Subaru, they added half liter (half small bottle) and said it was good. I drove off and noticed the Low Oil light was still on. I went back and they had to reset my computer to get the light to go off.

A NICE dealer fixed the squeak. Stupid seat design to blame.
Subaru hasn't done anything about my car burning oil, and won't. It has to burn 6.25 quarts in 7500 miles to get the engine fixed/replaced under warranty. I'm burning approximately a quart every 1500-2000 miles, I think. But I won't know till I drain it, pour in 5.3 quarts of factory oil, and drive 7500 miles.

good to hear about your seat, but crappy about the oil.

Its weird that some Imprezas don't burn oil, while other do, and they don't consider it a problem. Thats like me telling a kid that he can't smoke cigarettes, but tell another kid that its okay if he smokes a few cigarettes. I understand that there is a break in period where it may burn oil, but if its a reoccurring thing then something is definitely wrong. I have told many people about my burning oil and they pretty much laugh in my face because I bought a brand new car that burns oil. Not sure if Subaru is going to do anything about it yet, but the Subaru service rep. has started an Oil consumption report and is going to send it to SOA.

79letour, if you drive it the full 7500 miles according to the dealer oil change interval, shouldn't that bump you down to the low level mark? If so, then wouldn't that meet the criteria for them to do something about it? Can they do an oil consumption test?

Some cars consume oil, like my '05 STi. It consumed about 1 quart every 2k miles. My Honda Preludes ('94 VTEC & '00 Type SH) both consumed a ton of oil. Then there are some cars that don't consume any, like my '08 STI. Not trying to make light of the situation, but there are some cars that will consume at an acceptable rate. I think 79letour's car is a bit excessive IMO.

it really is. I AM pissed off. But I don't think any of you guys with GOOD imprezas would feel good about your new car needing a quart every thou or so.
Its clear that there is a ring seating problem on a few cars. What I fear is after 36,000 miles. O2 sensors will be going out. And with mileage, the consumption can ONLY get worse.

Yea but im trying to say that certain 2012 Subaru Imprezas don't burn oil, while other 2012 imprezas do burn oil.
As I am sure certain 05 Sti's burn Oil, and some don't. So why do some of us have to deal with a car that burns oil, and others do not?
How do I know that there isn't some bigger underlying problem that I will only find out when my warranty expires or reach a certain distance. The people who's car doesn't burn oil may not have to deal with that problem. I'm not too sure, but I don't want to be the one to find out.
I think my burns oil pretty excessively too. If my low oil light comes on twice before I have to do an oil change, I do suspect something is wrong.

Just a suggestion: If your low oil light is coming on multiple times between oil changes start checking it more regularly and topping it off.

Running it to the point when an idiot light comes on is not going to help oil consumption issues.

No- it has to burn more than 6.25 quarts for Subaru to care. A consumption test will just be a pita for nothing till I reach levels approaching that. Subaru of America has told me I should have oil on hand and top it off when I get gas. Lame and unacceptable.
Those of you suggesting to just pour oil in and shut up are obviously not the kind of consumers who expect any level of quality assurance and are pretty much willing to buy whatever excuses the car maker gives.
As consumer I find it unacceptable to have my car consuming oil and obviously not all of them are. So- if the oil consuming cars are such a small fraction, why all the corporate denial? Why not make customers happy?
Seems several people have found oil consumption and didn't find it acceptable to tote around quarts of oil for their brand new car.

I very much agree with you here. I don't understand how people are telling you to deal with it and just pour oil in it when its low. That's just putting a band-aid over a bigger problem. A brand new car shouldn't be burning oil, especially when there are other Imprezas that don't. That in itself shows there is a problem. That's not right at all. Just wondering, is there anyway a lawsuit could be made from this?
A brand new car should not be burning oil. Its not a performance vehicle, its not some kind of diesel truck that carries a massive load all day long. Its an economical car that shouldn't have any problems until after the warranty is over :P
And to try and answer your question, maybe the denial because they don't want people thinking their brand new FB20 engines are burning oil. Who wants to buy a car that burns oil?...I dont (unfortunately I got one by surprise) If only a small number of cars do it, maybe their going down the route of ignoring the problem...not too sure, but I hope something is done soon. Or I hope I find out what to do to make this problem better.
I don't like being the person that sells a lemon to another unsuspecting, hoping to be happy, but then pissed and annoyed person that has a car with a oil consuming problem.

totally aggreed. not sure about a lawsuit. I'm not a litigious (sp?) person. But as a consumer, I am not satisfied with Subaru's response at the CORPORATE level in the least. If enough documented cases of consumption pop up, and they sure seem to with fb's (and fa's), maybe Subaru will do something, or maybe SOMEONE ELSE will.
I really cannot, in good conscience, sell this car to another individual. I COULD'NT look some hard working guy or gal in the face and tell them what a "great" car this is, and how its "just, not for me"...

I dont know about a lawsuit either, just seeing if that's at all in the realm of a possible plan of action.
I think I am one of those hard working guys, because I worked my butt off to save enough money to buy myself a Subaru, and I didn't even buy a used car!

But I am happy with everything about the car, but oil consumption seems be be a big deal to me, and that doesn't make me happy.
I have been doing some research online and came across this article.
http://allwheeldriveauto.com/why-doe...ubaru-use-oil/
I'm pretty sure the guy that wrote the article works for Subaru. I tried to wrap my head around it in hopes of making myself feel better about my oil consuming car, but I still cannot.
Have a read and let me know what you think. What people have posted is interesting as well, but even if the guy is right, why does our Subaru (and some others on NASIOC) burn oil, while others are perfectly fine in that aspect? I hope to find this answer soon.
