UOA For 2002 Impreza TS Wagon 10353k
Prior use of theschaeffers 7k blend 15w-40, use of AMSOIL 7500 ORIGINAL FORMULA was used from 500m to 25708K, from this this mileage forward SCHAEFFERS 7K BLEND 15W-40 WEIGHT. Filter used was a fram for the whole duration, this schaeffers was installed around 10/02
This vehicle preffered weight is 5w-30 or 10w-30 yet it also allows for the use of 10w-40 therefore I chose the 15w-40. Here goes, first sample on unit had 6561k when sample was pulled, Schaffers comments "oil contamination and additives normal. Increase drain to 8000k" Same oil at with 10353k on it Schaffers comments "oil contamination and additives normal. Increase drain to 12,300k" Oil at this time was drained and installed Schaffers 5w-30 blend. 6561k................10353k -------------------------------- Cu___3 ________ 4 Fe___17________ 20 Cr___0___________1 Al___7___________8 Pb___2__________2 Additives read as follows below 6561k....................10353k ---------------------------------- Moly 89__________106 Phos 1061_______1562 Zn 114__________1361 Mg 38____________56 Ca 3031_________3749 sodium 0__________0 Boron 0___________0 Anti 0_____________0 fuel n_____________n H20 0_____________0 sili 12____________10 vis 13.55________15.54 sulfur 89___________2 oxid 15___________33 nitr 25____________48 Before the the drain of the last sample a trip of 1800m was taken to georgia. Yet throughout the oil's life it is continuous stop and go traffic with an occasional highway jaunt the vehicle had 36061k at the last drain now full with Schaffers 7k 5w-30. A 1/2 qt was added just before the 1800k trip, schaeffers registered both visc numbers to be within parameters to still be qualified as a 40 weight

Personally what this analysis does is speaks volumes that a well formated pmco oil can handle extended drains without any deteriment or harm to the engine, this being substantiated through a UOA, this also allows me to trend this oil and allow me to pick a cut off time that is comfortable without any harm to the motor.
So changing an oil out at 5k is unnecessary or even the 3k mentality is out the door. Bear in mind this is a synth blend not even a full polyol or ester synthetic oil given that if it were we could possibly extend the oil out even further |
