My10 had the same issue...got the dealer to acknowledge it after 3 trips. Go figure, as soon a they did they had a brz on the lot.
On the plus side...doesn't squeak anymore

Any modifications to the car? My stock clutch on my 2012 WRX went out around 8k with just full bolt ons + protune.
I'm thinking your clutch is going out. Possibly Subaru will cover it under warranty. If your ECU doesn't show any abusive behavior. |

In terms of driving with this issue, is it dangerous? Is it something that I should try to fix as soon as possible, or will it be ok for a couple months?

I have a 2009 wrx sedan with 113,000 miles on it. It's had a squeaky clutch for as long as I can remember. I didn't think anything about it until I started having trouble putting the car in reverse and 1st, and the brake pedal would move over with the clutch when I presse in the clutch. Took it to the dealer and they adjusted the clutch. It helped for a little while, but then it went right back to what it was doing before.
Took it to subaru and they said its a cracked firewall and they wont/cant fix it. Same thing with the dealer i got it from. They all say they need to send it to a dfferent shop. Car wont start since the clutch wont go all the way in, so im getting the car towed back to my house and plan on fixing it myself. I'd like to keep this from happening again. I know ill need to remove the dash and possibly the steering column to get to where ill need to weld. I'd like to reinforce that area too. Is that all ill need to do and do I really have to take out the steerig column? I plan on getting the grimmspeed brace as well. Now, does anybody have any advice/experience they could share? |

Hey guys! I have a 2009 WRX Sedan and have the same issue. Cracks in the firewall...no easy way to fix it other than taking out the dash and rewelding everything. Sad news is that after this was done, it cracked again so I'm back to square one. That being said, I contacted a class action attorney to see about legal ramifications concerning this. They took a look at the issue and we've got a really strong case to force a possible recall on our behalf for all 08+ WRX's affected. If you have a moment, please give Greg Coleman Law a call at 1-800-Hurt-Now. His website is www.gregcolemanlaw.com. We need to get as many people that have had this problem chiming in. Hopefully, if you've already paid to have this fixed you will get reimbursed by SOA. If you haven't fixed this yet, then they will fix their problem. Thanks everyone!!!

Besides the 3 welds underneath the windshield wiper assembly are their other places that the firewall may be cracked or broken or look out for?

There are two welds under the windshield wiper motor; the third is behind the dash on the shelf of the firewall. We're gaining traction on this so please if you know anyone that has had this happen, give Greg Coleman a call at 865-247-0080. Thanks!

I am currently having the problem with the clutch. I can barely manage to get into gear. Does SOA not understand there was a lawsuit almost 10 years ago that stated the you are allowed to use aftermarket parts without it voiding warranty issues? I'm 31, and I'm currently an engineering student, so I know about strengths of materials. Subaru should realize that they are in the wrong and should fix the problem. If not, it will cost them a lot more in the long run with lawsuits.

Yes that act talked about covering defects. I'm not still in warranty range, but a manufacturer defect should be covered anyway. Subaru does not does not explicitly tell not to use an aftermarket clutch. I had the dealer put in mone, and was told nothing other than they have put them in before. The welds themselves are not technically breaking. It is the metal by the welds that is breaking

This should lead any strengths and materials engineer to cone to the conclusion that the metal used in that spot wasn't strong enough to support the stresses involved. It is a clear cut manufacturers defect. I don't understand how Subaru doesn't get that.

Update: upgraded today from a squeaky pedal to a 2 stage click when pressing the clutch pedal in. Only noticeable when the car is off >\ I'm my mind I imagine its the spot welds under the wiper blade motor clicking errr

You are probably right. It's easy to check those welds though, but not so easy to fix. Keep us updated.

Not sure if you guys have seen this in the other thread that's out there but this was my "quick" solution to the broken spot weld behind the instrument cluster.
I'm really happy with it. It's nice and quiet now the pedal also feels a little better too. Quote:

Why wouldn't you just weld it since you took the time to remove that much if the dash? A good certified welder shouldn't charge you more than $50 to weld that whole bracket tight.

pulling the dash was wasn't that bad, so I wouldn't mind doing it again But it was kind of a spur of the moment thing. Plus I didn't want to deal with metal that thin being heat affected and breaking later.

That is my concern as well. I'm going to be welding in additional supports for that bracket. Plus welding across the top and bottom of the entire bracket for added security. I'm still trying to decide the best course of action with the firewall flex though. I've seen someone welding a piece of pipe to the steering column, but I thinks that's a bad idea, so I might do a cardboard mock up of an entire bracing fir the firewall to see what I can come up with. Anyone have any ideas?

I've been toying with the thought of adding some extra support structure on the pedal structure. I'll add it if I make anything up.
