Default Howto: Floor Mat Retainer Clip for Under $1.00

So like many of you my floor mat retainer clip is a useless piece of plastic:

Instead of shelling out $10 for another one that will enevitably become another useless piece of plastic (especially since the hole is getting stretched out), I decided to think about a more heavy-duty alternative.

I went to the hardware store and got the following items:

1- 1/4" x 20 1"-long hex screw
2- 1.25" diameter fender washer
1- 1/4" washer
2- split lock washer
1- 1/4" x 20 nut
1- 1/4" x 20 wing nut

Total for the above items came to $0.98.

My theory was to have a way to attach the clip to the carpet, and not just have it being retained by the hole. I also wanted a way for it to be easy to remove when vacuuming out my car (which I didn't do before taking these pictures, I know, haha).

Tools needed:
1 opened-ended wrench
1 socket wrench

The size of the head on your hex screw will determine what size of the above you need. I had a deep 11mm socket and 11mm open-ended wrench that fit pretty well on mine, so that's what I used:

Hole in my dirty carpet:

Notice how the floormat is pushed way up under the petals...very annoying.

First, stick the screw through the center of one of the fender washers:

I was able to slide this into the hole sideways:

Next, put the second fender washer onto the screw on the top side of the carpet:

Next, put one of the split lock washers on:

Now, put the nut on top of the lock washer. There was a little space between the fender washers and the carpet where they didn't completely cover, so I slipped the open-ended wrench in there on the hex bolt head:

I put the socket wrench on the hex nut and went to work torqing it down. The purpose of putting the nut on here is to sandwich the carpet between the two fender washers, accomplishing a way to attach the clip to the carpet, and not just have it being retained by the hole:

Torqued down. This puppy aint comin' off:

Next I put the floor mat hole over the protruding screw threads:

Next I put on the regular sized 1/4" washer and then the split lock washer:

Wing nut, torqued down by hand:

Voila:

Another great creative solution! I love creating quick fixes using random pieces of hardware. Luckily the 08+ has what appears to be a permanently mounted metal piece that holds it in place. It uses a small flared end at the top instead of a fastener.

Might I suggest using a female threaded knob such as this one. They are available in all sorts of shapes and sizes and I'm pretty sure you can get them from the hardware store you got your other pieces at. I know Ace has them.

I wonder if someone could just sew Velcro onto the bottom of the floor mat instead...

Yes, definitely a possibility. I just used the wing nut cause it was $0.10.

Sorry, updated my original post. I was quoted $4.76 for the one piece and $5.26 for the second piece.

Of course anyone could, but it wouldn't cost less than $1.00

Also, you can avoid using the nut + lock washer and the wing nut + lock washer by purchasing some nuts/wing nuts with nylon inserts.

Subaru has had a fix for this for quite some time that involves something very similar.

I did something similiar but I drilled a small hole through the top of the bolt and put a Hair Pin Cotter Pin through it. But I defiantly dig the wing nut.

My plastic holder broke 5 years ago - just put some duct tape under carpet - works for awhile until you vacuum than replace. carpet never moves and you can't see the duct tape under the carpet so who cares. I love duct tape.

Thanks for this. I was able to do it with all the random nuts, bolts, washers I had laying around. Plus I was able to torque it all down by hand. Thank God for retarded strong hands. Literally took me all of 3 minutes. I actually feel stupid for not thinking of it first.

Brilliant stuff. Just bought my 2002 WRX last week and noticed this little problem. I'll be heading out to the hardware store here in a few minutes!

i put a ziptie through the little plastic piece that holds it now so the carpet cant come off of it. easy to just fold back any side and vacuum under it too.

Good idea.

I'm not sure what's under the carpet, so I guess it's possible. If you torque the nut down with the lock washer underneath it won't come off. It's been on there for some time and it won't come off unless I get out some tools.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions on improvements or anything, feel free to post them up. This is why we're all here...help each other out
