02 wrx "randomly" stalling when coming to stop
this issue started a few months back, the car is a stock 02 wrx wagon, i have not done anything to the engine, most that i have ever done (myself) to the car is change the oil/filter, ect...
when coming to a stop i let in the clutch and apply breaks, before coming to a complete stop the idle will drop to 0. first time was maybe 3 months ago, second was maybe last month, but in the last 2 weeks it hss done this 4 times maybe, today i was driving for less than 45 min and it stalled twice. i was sitting at a drive through for several minutes and it was fine, got my food drove off, at the very first stop i came to i did the same thing, pushed in clutch and applied breaks then it stalled out. i tried to restart it again before coming to a full stop by pushing the clutch in all they way and turned the key, and then i heard the starter making a very unpleasant grinding noise.... so i came to a full stop, and shut the car off completely (no one was behind me), then turned the key and the car started right up. any ideas what this could be? i am becoming worried because it seems to be getting progressively worse edit: also when the car stalled i do remember seeing the check engine light come on, but once the car started up again the light was gone. i just used my code reader and it said 0 codes :/

This was happening on the previous car I owned. Turned out to be a bad maf sensor.

Buy a cleaner for maf. Then if no change swap with a local guy. And drive any leaks on the bov?

Do you have an actual blow off valve? or still the stock bpv. Both of my buddies who had BOVs were untuned and had the exact same problems.

it seems like this issue is caused by a vacuum leak, or something air related?

Just to clear a few things up,
That funny noise your starter made when trying to engage it while the vehicle was still moving... that's the gear in the starter trying to engage onto an already turning flywheel, NOT a good idea. The check engine light comes on whenever you turn the key to the 'ON' position, this is a bulb check, happens in every car. When the car stalls out the ignition is left in the 'ON' position. So therefore the check engine light will be on until the ignition is turned off or vehicle is restarted. This is not a code setting. |

well that makes sense, i stopped turning the key immediately when i head the grinding then waited till i came to a stop. :/ i had a feeling that was why the check engine light was on, i figured i would check though. i will try cleaning the IACV. i will search for a way to clean a IACV for a 02 WRX, unless someone knows a guide or maybe a video to link |

I believe there is a really good thread that walks you through cleaning the IACV somewhere on this forum, you'd have to search it up though. |

that is the thread i followed to clean my iacv back in july. it is a really helpful write up. the gasket is about 8 bucks from dealer if i recall correctly. if that valve is ur problem the cleaning should do the trick.

My stock '02 WRX wagon does this, too. The issue seems to come and go, but it is always when I'm braking with the clutch pedal in.

Could be your IAC(Idle Air Control valve) a bad MAF sensor or if you have a intake with a big MAF it really messes with your car I had a short ram Perrin and my car wouldn't stall but it would drop extremely low in RPM's and shoot right back up to idle.
