Question Clunk clunk! when braking

Ummm, the car is a 95 AWD Impreza L Coupe. When I brake slowly there is a nasty clunking sound comming from the passenger side rear wheel area. I don't have a clue what it is, but since it's only when I brake I'm assuming it's a problem in the brakes. Also has made the same noise when I stopped while backing up to go forward, except that was very loud, as if someone had just kicked the back of the car!

Any insight would be helpful on this problem.

Talking

Im no techie here, but you could narrow it down to the wheel bearing, the axle, or something else I think. Or maybe the roter is loose if that is even possible and catching when you apply the brakes; slamming into something that keeps it from spinning on the axle spindle thingie! Know what I mean?
Good luck,
Kevin

Post

Inzomniac,

I had or still have that same problem but I learnt to live with it. I brought my car in for the same kind of sound you described. The clunking sound was explained to me as the movement of the brake pad back and forth (front left wheel). Apparently, there is a little travel in the calipers and sometimes you get the clunk. The service dept put some sort of mechanic's lubricant on the back side of the front pads and the sound went away but once I went through a weekend of snow in Vancouver. The next day the clunking came back.

At least it wasn't my brakes falling apart. You should probably go to you local Subura Service Dept though.

How this helps.
