Default 2.5L STI flywheel vs 2.0L flywheel

Are 2.0L WRX and 2.5L STI flywheels the same?
will they both bolt to the crank properly? i seem to remeber hearing that they had different bolt patterns.

yes i searched.

thanks!

Check the Clutch & Flywheel FAQ again....from memory the STI clutch is slightly larger and lighter if memory serves. They are different though.

no the sti flywheel is the same outside diameter as the wrx, but it has mounting tabs for the pressure plate, the sti flywheel weighs like 19lbs, wrx 23.4 iirc, the bolt pattern to the crank is the same, but im sure the clutch and flywheel have to be used together..how do i know,, i just put a 2007 sti 6speed clutch and flywheel into my 02 5speed wrx.

I actually bought an STi clutch and flywheel to put in my 02 WRX. For some reason the combination is mm's thicker. Just enough that you have to grind some of the ribs inside the bell housing to make it fit. I did not install it. And actually still have it in a box in my closet. Need to sell it someday.

yea, if you have a cut off wheel and a carbide bit, its not very difficult to grind down

They are not the same flywheel. The STI flywheel surface has a step down and the 02-05 WRX is flat surface. The WRX clutch is 230mm and the STI's is 240mm. In addition, unless you know what you're doing and have the ability to rebalance the flywheel you shouldn't be grinding it. As such you need to use a STI clutch with a STI flywheel and the same for the WRX.

sweet thanks for all the info guys.

I have a 6-speed in my WRX but im still using the EJ205. so a 6mt clutch will fit no problem.....

what do you guys think about the performance of the clutch?

the OEM 5 speed lasted me the longest. Since then i have had an F1 stage 1 clutch, that sucked, it was toastin 3-4 months with normal street driving ..... and then i got an Exedy stage 2 (3puck) which was too agressive for street use. it shudders like CRAZY and is very hard to drive when stuck in traffic. i blame it for the ultimate downfall on my 5mt gearbox. i didnt break any gears but the main shaft is supposedly completely stripped. i havent actually split the case yet though. anyways it sounds like its full of rocks so i swapped it.

thanks for the info!

you don't grind the flywheel you grind inside the trans housing so the thicker flywheel clears

oh yeah of course. i know what part to grind. but i dont have to grind anything anyways, because i have a 6-speed in my car so no clearance issues here.

Thanks for the warning tho!

who said anything about grinding the flywheel? of course you grind the trans housing, what else would you grind? also ACT. who said the flywheel was the same?the flywheel outside diameter is the same, the part that the starter engages, or a wrx starter wouldnt work on an sti clutch. thats why i stated I put a 2007 sti 6speed clutch assy, and 2007 sti 6speed flywheel into a 2002 5 speed wrx gearbox,,is that clear enough

First....I misread the post, it was not directed at you or anyone in particular since there are 2 posts referencing grinding. I have nothing against you or anyone when I post on NASIOC or any of the other forums I visit.

Second...Relax, this is an internet forum.....it's not the end of the world if I didn't get what you were saying right away .

for me it was worth it because i got such a good deal on the whole package, clutch assy, flywheel with 800miles on it. way cheaper than getting a new clutch and flywheel then breaking it in. this clutch looked brand new and was good to go as soon as it was installed. a lot of people dont like to buy used parts , but if they look brand new ,why not.

humm.....

I have NA, WRX, and STi clutches at one point. The STi's disc is bigger than the WRX. The WRX disc is bigger than the NA. STi's flywheel was different from the WRX. WRX flywheel is same shape as NA flywheel but different pressureplate bolt pattern. '02-'05 WRX flywheel and '06+ WRX flywheel share the same pressureplate bolt pattern and boltup to each other.

My '99 Impreza L starter works on '06 WRX flywheel w/ 5spd and STi flywheel w/ 6spd swap. NO you can't use WRX pressureplate on the STi flywheel. YES you can use WRX/ 2.5RS clutch disc on STi FW/pressureplate combo.
