ECU recall performed? I think so
Was car modified? stock

Everything was fine during the 1st 10 000km and after that the car started burning oil much more then normal. In period from 10k to 18k kilometers it burned 3liters of oil, then in period 18k-23k it burned 3.5 liters of oil and then in period of last 4000km it burned 4.5liters of oil. During those periods the car stayed with little amount of oil one time and that probably caused some engine components to brake. I am still waiting call from dealership where i bought the car if subaru will accept my warranty and to give me new block or whatever... btw i never driven the car on autoX or any race track or something like that

Was car modified? (If so, list mods)

Actually I had stock pistons taken out and WEISCO 95.5 put in and my car possibly blew a forged piston on 20psi ATP30R, FMIC + supporting mods.

Good bye sti.
You blew a forged piston?! I'm thinking you should be looking at your tune/setup for that one. Generally forged pistons can take a fair amount of abuse. I wouldn't necessarily blame that on Subaru.

This is an issue when tuning almost any newer stock engine not just a subaru. If you want to tune the first mod to any engine should be a good set of pistons. It might seem expensive but you will save lots of $ in the long run.
It's not a matter of being cheap. I think the hypereutectic pistons were chosen because they can be used with tighter tollerances than forged unit typically. This results in a motor that burns less oil, is quieter and has the potential to last longer.

Also, how will it save you money in the long run. I mean, I suppose if you do it right off the bat, you can sell your unbroken stockers, but pulling a motor and doing pistons is about the same labor/money if you do it now versus then. I dunno, just my thinking.

They are used because of the actual emission tests require "good" emissions from cold. Those pistons can be run with almost no P/W clearance and therefore do have a perfect seal from cold. This helps emissions.

Hence the "burns less oil" I stated.

I've blown 2 ringlands in less than 7000 miles on my stock 2009 STI.

Model year:2009
Build date:?
Purchase date:5/2009
Failure date:7/2009
Mileage at failure:2700
ECU recall performed? N/A (yes)
Was car modified? AP 91

Ringland in #4 blew at 2700 miles. SOA would only replace the piston...

Now the car is back at the dealership with 95% leakage in #2 at 6700 miles. Car is stock. I'm wondering if the AP, which I bough because I read about how "unsafe" the stock tune was, is part of the problem?

How was it diagnosed?
Compression or leakdown test?

That's an interesting question. I'm curious why you ask...?

Leakdown test only. Came back at 95-100% leakage in for cylinder #2. At least that's what the dealer told me. I asked if they tested the other cylinders and they said they hadn't as there were no codes noting a misfire in other cylinders. I complained saying "please test the other cylinders". Several days later they said they tested the others and they were fine. I'm not sure I believe they even tested them.

Maybe I should ask what the results were specifically?

My fear is that SOA will only replace the piston again. I feel that I should receive a new long block based on some of the casting issues I've read about with the heads and them possibly causing problems like I'm having. Any advice on how to handle this situation is much appreciated.

All of this emission BS is just making our cars more and more ****tier. TGV, pistons, and much more that i can't think of b/c of all of the medical terminology i my head.

ECU recall performed? NO/ Yes
Was car modified No/ Yes

First engine showed no signs of problems. It only had 4000 miles and I heard a knock and then it was all down hill. Piston ring cracked and detonation cracked the piston and the rod when through the block. Bent the crank. Subaru said it was my driving style that caused it. While installing the new engine the recall came out for the ECU so I thought it was the cause. I felt better about the engines not being a POS. 11000 miles later I have header back and the car tuned. Driving it like normal and it started smoking like the Bat Mobile. Got it towed to Subaru and they took off the DP and Intercooler and there was oil pouring out. They told me that the warranty is no good on my engine since I have a DP. They wanted to charge me 1200 to let them tell me what is wrong with my engine. Well if they don't even know whats wrong how can they tell me that the DP caused it. I have been fighting with SOA and have not gotten very far. I pulled my engine and stripped it down and all of the rings are broken. Subaru made a bad engine and they know it. They have been changing so many engines and loosing money. The ECU recall was an attempt to fix the problem and it didn't work. I am really disappointed. This is my second STI. I had a 97 and never had any issues. I drove it like I stole it and it seemed to run better the harder I pushed it. It takes 100 people with the same problem to start a class action lawsuit!! Let's Do it!

They are blowing stock, stg 1, stg 2, OTS maps, custom tunes. It doesn't seem to matter. It is the way the ECU works to control detonation that is killing the engines, not the tunes in most cases.

Bump... curious how all of the guys with modified cars made out with the warranty work. How the dealers were about the modified cars etc. Some said it was not a problem, while others have had major disputes over it. The majority, didn't say.

Reeeealllly nervous about my 08sti now. I have 8300 miles and so far no issues on a stage 2 map.

Depends on the dealer and your relationship with them. Some dealers are mod friendly within reason.

Log it every gas fill up, pay attention to FB and learned knock correction, monitor your oil and do a UOA.
If you really wanna feel warm inside do a leak down test...

First time the car was worked on I had to bring in logs using RomRaider and the tech took the car home and did some logging on his own. Then Subaru allowed a compression check and both #2 and #4 failed. The second time, the tech drove it and then did a compression check and #2 failed only 3000k miles later. This is my DD and the motor blew after a spirited subaru cruise with the STLSubaru group.

I was wondering if anyone that popped a piston and installed forged pistons could send me one of the cracked pistons. I work as a grad student in a Materials lab and I have background in Mechanical Engineering and getting my Masters in Material Science and Engineering. I could slice up the piston and look at the failure site. See exactly what the problem is. I asked Subaru to let me have my failed piston but they would not let me have it. I would pay for shipping and it would be good to have this knowledge for the Subaru community.

Thanks,
Tony

On stock cars it's clearly a manufacturing problem. The factory knock control system is very aggressive to protect from detonation. I remember back in 2003 I knew a girl whose daddy had just bought her an '04 WRX (automatic no less). She used to put 87 octane in it all the time and she would go WOT often enough. She wrecked it relatively quickly but never had any signs of compression loss or ringland failure.

Oh and btw everybody, the factory piston-to-wall clearance on the '08 models are no different than the 04-05.

2004 WRX is not the same engine or ECU as a 2008+STI.
