Talking My mom is asking questions about Foresters and Legacys....

ok, my mom is tired of the old crappy Chrysler minivan which has had the tranny and every sensor known to man go bad....so she is asking me tonight about the foresters and legacys, knowing that I love subarus...she is big on safety, gas mileage and being able to tow some decent loads. With that being said, could you guys send me some safety stuff to show her. I have searched the Insurance Institute stuff and know all about the reliability.
Does Subaru have a towing package for any of there vehicles?...
thanks, Micah
(waiting for ron to chime in)

subaru has a tow package for just about everything, including the WRX. no doubt that they would have one for the forester. you can hit any dealership *cough* perrry* cough* and get teh literature that you want.

search for the crash test results. I know that when the wrx was introduced, it was 1st in its class for all the tests. A volvo (still excellent) came in 2nd.

well I know the forester is really good from the searching I have done, but the newer legacy sedans(atleast) had issue with side impact airbags...
by towing package I mean more than a tow hitch...

Look into the outback wagons. My mom just picked an '05 outback LL bean edition, pretty sure they offer a towing package with the 3.0R. It would be the best motor for towing IMHO.

I know that the Forester and the new Outback recieved 5 Star results from the NHTSA. The O/B has 6 air bags total, the Forester has 4. ABS standard on all models, but a Forester X has drum rear brakes, the Forester XS, XT and LLBean and all O/Bs have 4 wheel, 4 channel ABS disc brakes. Towing rates at about 2500 pounds for the cars, but the 3.0 goes up to 3000 lbs. If your mom wants to go for the 3.0 VDC O/B wagon, it has the VDC(Vehicle Dynamics Control) that is amazing. Itll be a standard feature on the new Tribeca.

I'll second the OBW vote - '05s also have the air bag curtains, which my '04 doesn't. There was a thread (maybe the outback forum) discussing towing packages and capacities - my battery is low, but I'll try to remember to search for it when I'm on the desktop.

This is my second OBW, the first one was used and I bought it when still suffering bad car karma (had 4 dud cars in a row) - it was the best car I ever owned in terms of being reliable. And for as much as people knock the warranty, it covered the only three major issues: alternator, water pump, and the float sensor in the fuel tank.
So far no issues with either the WRX or the new OBW

If gas mileage is a concern, she may want to look at the Forester X or XS. Maybe a non-turbo Outback 4 cyl.

The 3.0 would be better suited to towing, just I'm sure the gas mileage isn't the highest.

I think I recall all of the towing packages being limited to 2500 pounds, but this was before all the newest models came out...and of course my memory could be wrong.

Cool

my parents were driving a crappy ford escort until last weekend. i talked them into looking at a forester and they fell in love with it. they are newly retired with a dog. it's big enough for all their new travels and garage sale hunts on the weekends, plenty of dog sitting room and very fuel efficient for the city driving. also has a tow package for 2600lb. they bought the xs model. just enough buttons to confuse my mother

I'm personally leaning her towards the Ob wagon witht eh 3.0... but it's gas mileage is 19 and 25...same as the GT with the 2.5 turbo...
