Default 2000 RS motor debate.

Ok Subaru people. I just want to kind of hear everyones thoughts. I currently have a 2000 RS with a V3 Ej20k motor in it. Its going through body work currently. Will be used for shows and occasional hillclimb. Its not a DD
A: Keep what i have to upgrade slowly(not many use these motors so it would be unique)
B: Switch to a easier USDM (cheaper to upgrade and upkeep )

I am also looking at switching over to a USDM EJ205 for emissions compatibility. From what I understand all we really need to switch is the wiring harness and intake manifold. We can keep the block if we want to.

EJ207 is a nice block, but does nothing for emissions and is expensive in comparison to an ej20g.

Problem is I bought this car not knowing jack s*** about this motor. I don't even know how it works through the OB0 2 port.

main thought is because I'm oblivious to this motor. usdm I know pretty well. just a thought. and I didn't want to spend money on the 20k if it wasn't worth it. seems everything for it is more expensive

Legos. 90% of that motor is identical to the EJ205. The other 10% is near identical. If you use the parts compatibility thread, you will see that there are generally USDM crossover parts. Really very few things, like the valves and the pistons are unique to the Ej20K. And if you break those parts, there are always aftermarket options.

The EJ20K is a fabulous motor. The head ports are massive compared to an Ej205 and they generally tested to well over 300hp stock regardless of published numbers.

There are two reasons the Ej20K gets a bad rap. Number one is the phase I design, though a lot more EJ20K's are phaseII than the general public realizes.

But that's not the root of the rumours. The big issue is spun rod bearings. And they aren't the result of some inherent design flaw with it. They are the fault of it being tuned right to the edge and often not run with gas that is equal to the tune. Bringing them into the States and running them on our pump gas makes it even worse. The single best thing you can do to your EJ20K if it is healthy is only run it on race gas, or get a standalone ECU and get a proper dyno tune.

fabulous, this Is a response I like. What's more worth it? the ESL daughterboard or a Powerfc? ill need to subscribe to that compatibility thread.

That's the right thread. It is the one stickied at the top. You need to spend some time reading through it, and maybe taking some notes. It has no formal organization.

For ECU stuff, maybe Rob will chime in. He's the tooner around here. I'm more of a mechanical guy. I've done plenty of harness merges for swaps, but always ran OEM ECUs when we did.

I'm running an ej205 ECU/intake manifold with a closed deck ej20g and built ej205 heads. Obviously lacks AVCS, but to keep costs down and maintain the plug and play with my wiring setup it is a good, budget option. The harnesses and ECU's can be found cheap!

The ESL stuff is slick. I don't have one for the only reason being it cannot do what my stock ecu w/ rom does in terms of lc, yet. (v1/2)

The K engines are good, and parts availability and compatibility is a moot talking point from ignorance circa 2005

i have been at this point for nearly 6 years now (wow)
3 issues of note for tuning a k
#1 em - the power-fc sucks its 20 year old beat-ass technology, esl is promising but hardly proven, vi-pec is still my favored route. On a side note i also consider the 6s ecu to have too aggressive a tune for 93 octane e-10 usdm gas
#2 injectors 480CC injectors are too small to for anything -needs to me the first upgrade (paired with EM)
#3 rod bearings- after working on this for better part of 5 years the simple answer is to chuck the k block and go for a 257 block+injectors+em

I may just drive the car as is till it blows and swap a usdm in. The way it sounds at least is its alot of hassle.

Mainly though i being told to stick with the 20k once its tuned and block built. everyone is telling me its a hell of a motor.

what parts are need maintain ej20k when putting a 257 block?
