22B Diesel is Mixed-Up Madness
Impreza 22b Diesel is Mixed-Up Madness By Subiesport Staff Watch the exclusive video! In the history of Subaru models, none is more revered than the 22B. Built in 1998 to celebrate Subaru’s third WRC title, less than 500 wide-body specimens were ever manufactured. This makes a true 22B sighting here in The States about as rare as a Unicorn. But automotive Unicorns aren’t all that uncommon at the annual Pikes Peak hillclimb, just outside Colorado Springs. Every year drivers from around the globe tackle the mountain with epic and unusual machinery. Here, even Group B monsters from days past, like the Ford RS200, are a common sight. Even with a value of around $250,000 they’re still driven in anger as drivers risk limb and metal to beat the clock. This year, the slate of entries was just as unusual as ever: Mike Ryan brought out his custom Freightliner, Sebastian Loeb drove a Peugeot that bends space and time, Pat Doran thrashed a Ford RS200, and Gregoire Blachon brought his Subaru Impreza 22b. Naturally, it’s not a real 22b. There are a few flaws in the disguise. First, the wing isn’t quite right. Second, there are only two real 22b’s in the United States: One is owned by Heuberger Motors, the other by Subaru corporate. This car didn’t look like either of them. Third, this one is powered by a Subaru diesel motor. Yes, you read that correctly. A real 22b would be powered by a closed-deck 2.2-liter turbo petrol engine, of course. We caught up with Blachon in-between test sessions (sorry about the less-than-awesome interview audio, we were literally running from one location to another and didn’t have our standard interview mic handy) and after his run to get the low-down on this killer concoction melding the best of Subaru’s past with a greener future.

As the former owner of a green 1.8 Brighton, this is truly inspirational.

The diesel is definitely cool, but the article keep referring it to the 22B.
People make WRC replicas all the time with the widebody. The wing is unlike the 22b of course, because it's a WRC replica styled. Subiesport don't know Subies anymore? |

It "started" as a 22B. Isn't it highly modified? That made me when I saw it in 2005. Still loved seeing and hearing it...........

The article below the video states what it really is. Funny thing is, the first thing they mention that isn't right is the wing? Would the fact that it's LHD be kinda important? First thing I noticed. |

If it just me or is he not going full bore on that hill? That's pretty much how I used to drive to my way to get groceries when I lived in CO. No wonder he was slow to the top.

That was really awesome as I keep hoping SOA brings us the turbo diesel. While he wasn't that fast, I bet he was averaging the best MPG getting there!
One question I have for anyone knowledgeable about diesels: I understand the MPG improvement and being able to run on lower octane diesel being overall better for the environment, but a lot of diesels I see on the road spew black smoke out the tailpipe when they give it the beans. What gives with that and is it really something toxic? Regardless, I want one. |

From behind you can't necessarily tell if it's LHD or RHD. Though, yeah, dead give-away.

He is still trying to get the ECU mapping down, so that he has the right fuel tune. Since no one has done it before, it's an all new tune. He was working with the company Banks (who helped Mike Ryan this year in his Freightliner with a better fuel curve) right before raceday up to the clouds.
The guy (Gregoire Blachon) is importing the motors into Tennessee if you want a Diesel Boxer. He's running a 2012. Nice guy. He's not time attacking, more for advertisement that this Boxer Diesel exists in the States now. |

Here's the backside of the Boxer Diesel. Notice the dark plume
There were two RS200s, here's one: I like their car numbers. |

Love that rs200, the 22b is neat too. Wish it had the petrol motor, though I understand the challenge he was after and respect it. Very envious.
