timing belt change in a 1.8 from 86
i just picked up a beater for winter rig. 86 subaru gl wagon. it was having timing issues the guy said. it looks like the timing belt is way off. i cant turn the distributer enough to get it to hit at the right time with the firing. he swears that he out the belt on right. im doubting him though so i oulled it apart ready to do it. 1st time to do this on a dual timing belt so just wondering if anyone knows of a tutorial on here. ive seached but everything i find has nothing to do with my situation. any help wopuld be great

First Doing the drivers side belt: Line the cam gear mark at 12, then look through the access hole on top on the bell housing and you will see an arrow notched into it. Turn the engine over until you see three lines in a row all within an inch of each other (DO NOT use the timing marks on the flex plate/flywheel or any marks on the crank gear/pully!) use the three little lines. Line the arrow up with the middle line. Put the first belt on and tension it.
Second Doing the passenger side belt: Rotate the crank 360 degrees and line the arrow up with the middle line again. Then line the passenger side cam gear at 12 and put the belt on and tension. The passenger side gear should be at 12, the flywheel/flex plate should be at the middle line, and the drivers side gear should be at 6. |
