Post Sheet Metal Screws In Tires

Have any of you had luck putting sheet metal screws in the tread of your tire to improve traction on ice? I'll be purchasing new tires in the spring and might try this out on my stock tires, I can't make them any worse (as long as I don't puncture them).

You are kidding,,,right??
If the cops caught you on the street with a setup like this they probably wouldn't even give you the option of driving home. Can you say confiscate?

Studded tires are illegal in many states, let alone DIY ones made up of screws.

I've never actually seen this done, a guy at work told me about it and I wondered if it was done by others.

A few years ago, my dad did this to make a studded rear tire for his mountain bike. It worked pretty well in the ice. I'm not sure about a car tire though...

umm,,,uhhhh not smart, youll probably end up with 4 flat usless tires. Plus the heads of the screws will just get worn off. Be smart and dont try and do that. I dont know about ohio but in jersey studded tires are illegal and tote a hefty fine.

Last year at an ice race there were many types of dedicated ice tires. The most successful tires used 3/8" bolts w/flat washers through the tire. The inside of the tire was lined with rubber sheets to cover the bolt heads and keep them from chaffing the mandatory heavy duty tube.

i think you may be able to run studded tires here in ohio in certain months my friend did it on his car and didn't get in trouble and he was always getting pulled over.

and it left cool ruts in the cement too

We sell pre-studded tires, but Goodyear won't let us install the studs themselves. They are legal from November to March. I believe it's tire chains that are totally illegal in Ohio.
