Default why wont my turbo drain line drain!?!?!?!

This has been seemingly consistant on all three motors this turbo has been on. 2.2 , 2.5 phase 1 and 06 2.5 RS block.

GT30 equivilent. Has 1/16" restrictor inline right at the banjo bolt. Twin turbo head, so has factory drain pipe. Turbo drain pointing DOWN. Clamp both top and bottom of the drain hose. Installed NEW drain pipe gasket at turbo.

Leaks, leaks, leaks. As in I can watch it drip.... Right onto the uppipe, what a mess. It didnt used to be such a problem, because I didnt have an uppipe right below the leak, but now, whew, smoke ALL the time, especially when coming to stops....

I do have significant blowby at idle, you can feel it at the oil filler, but as soon as the engine revs, this goes away....

Any ideas?

Thanks

Maybe the drain tube or the turbo is warped from heat and is not seating.

OK, I pulled the drain line off the tube and put a can under it and started the engine COLD.

half filled the can in 5 seconds. A pencil wide stream of oil was streaming out. And this is from a TINY restrictor hole with COLD oil.

Reworking the restrictor pill!

ARRRRRRGGGGGH.

Restrictor size is now .021.

Effing still pours out too much oil.

AND it appears my turbo seal is blown due to the previous WAY too much oil flowing out.

I find the new drain gaskets do not crush fully until well heated. Once heat cycled you need to re-tighten it. Even then it may still leak a little if the surfaces are not flush.

The drain washers are good now, its leaking out the bottom where the hose goes onto the metal head drain line. Like its backing up.

Oh, and I felt for air pulsating out of the drain hose when it was off. No outstanding backpressure at all. So why won't it drain.

How is the hose in position to the drain line, if it is kinked or even bent you could have leaking oil.

I am in the middle of narrowing it down to determine if its leaking out the bottom or top. I have tied a narrow strip of white rag around the drain line and if it gets wet, then I know the problem is at the turbo.

I did have a blown turbo after all though. I pulled it apart yesterday and replaced the turbine oil seal and suddenly, no more oil leaking into the exhaust.

Could you be a little more specific? If this uses a Garrett CHRA, they ususally leak out the front piston seal, not the turbine side. At least that's been my experience.

Also, what kind of breather/CC system do you have going on? The fact that you don't have a ton of blowby at 2K rpm with no load doesn't tell you very much about what kind of crankcase pressure you might have at 6K at full spool - that's usually where these turbos have the big drainage problem, not at idle.

Any update on this? I'm having a similar problem and need to resolve it soon. I too have replaced the oil drain gasket at the turbo checked and rechecked the tube and still am getting oil dripping.

Well, the rad tied around the drain line determined (hopefully) that it is leaking at the drain tube. Not sure why yet. and its a pain to unbolt... So for the time being, I will leave the rag in place and see how long that will last... Not a daily driver by the way...

My crankcase vents through a "catch can" of sorts to atmosphere. I need to get a better catch can as what I am using is a pnuematic air filter..

The rag is just to stop the oil from draining down onto the exhaust for the moment.

I had made my own drain tube by making a steel plate and welding a stock tube to it. I just reground the plate, welded the inside this time, bored it out, and just reattached it 5 minutes ago.

Fingers crossed there was a pinhole leak somewhere in the weld.

If your turbo is BB, it needs very little oil.

If its thrust bearing, it's likely it needs ALOT of oil.

Make sure your drain line is pretty large in diameter.........atleast as large as the stock hose which is somewhere in the 5/8" diameter hose.

hope all is well

Success! No more leaks! (fingers crossed and toss a penny into the Wishing Well!)

Still smoking (comes and goes) on accelleration and decelleration but minimal and since its not a dd, I can live with it for now.

SMOOTH power by the way.. Happy camper for now.

I've been pretty successful with my $30 catch can.

Its a length of copper pipe with a T fitting at the top, the horizontal goes to the crank case vent and the top goes to a filter made for a big block chevy valve cover breather.

I stuffed some open cell filter foam in the T for good measure too.

Have you pulled off the turbo intake to check for oil? If there's a draining problem, it usually pukes oil out of the front piston and pools up right at the housing. And, if you fixed it, it'll take a little while to move it all through.

FWIW, every time I've had this happen, the I/C piping and the I/C itself were thoroughly slathered up with oil...

Its a Journal gt30 "thing" turbo. The oil leak from the drain pipe was due to a small hole in the welding. I ground down and rewelded it and then reground it down again.

As for the turbo leaking oil, I tore it Wednesday and replaced the turbine oil seal and so no more oil puking into the exhaust.
