OMGHi2U iPhone 4 is $149 at Radio Shack + you can tradein an old iPhone for $75-$125 discount

Quote:
We're told that the $50-off sale is being done to ramp up awareness surrounding Radio Shack's (admittedly low-key) wireless business, and if we had to guess, we'd say it'll probably work to perfection. Ever since the handset began shipping this summer, the going rate was $199 (on contract) for the 16GB model or $299 (also on contract) for the 32GB flavor; this deal hacks $50 from each, and there's even an 8GB iPhone 3GS for $49 if you're looking to take things even lower. Better still, The Shack's offering a $75 trade-in credit on any functional / non-cracked iPhone 3G as well as $125 for a 3GS in like condition, meaning that you could walk in today, hand over your 3GS, and walk out with an iPhone 4 for $25 (plus activation fees). Naturally, the deal's only available in brick-and-mortar locations (read: not online), and the fun comes to a close on December 11th. So, who's in?
In Radio Shack stores:

New iPhone 3GS (8GB) = $49
New iPhone 4 (16GB) = $149
New iPhone 4 (32GB) = $249

Also get an addition $75-$125 with trade in of a working and non-cracked iPhone:

iPhone 3G = $75 off
iPhone 3GS = $125 off

Not a bad deal. I haven't been too pleased with my iPhone, but I can technically go there right now, trade in my old iPhone 3G, and walk out of there with an iPhone 4 for $74.

Oh, and here is a link: http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/04/a...st-time-50-of/

This is contradictory. Why would you pay to have more of the same bad quality?

3G is t3h suck. While I'd rather have an N1, or some other respectable Android phone, I can't complain too much about my iP4. Needs a better camera, and free tethering, but besides that it's been good to me.

I'm trying to talk the SO into getting that new dual core Motorola Olympus if it comes out by Jan 15...

Hmmm. I have a 3G and have been thinking of upgrading. My problem is that I work in a secure area so I can't have a camera at all, so I have to take out the camera (or cameras) and remove and cover the lens hole. With the 4G I will have to remove two, and I am not sure how much better the 4 is than the 3. I will probably still look into this and see if it is going to be available in my area tomorrow. How big of an upgrade is the 4 over the 3?

(AKA over double)

No-camera? I'm not sure how easily the camera(s) are to remove. The back camera is raised so it looks like it is set in, so that may be doable, but the front facing carmera is under a sheet of glass.

I think the front camera would be next to impossible to remove.

Well, looks like it might be time to upgrade. No wonder why my phone seems to be running so slow with even with the lame apps.

About the cameras, I will have to look into it further, but it was easy to remove in the 3G. You just take the case apart, unplug the circuit board inside, unplug the camera, then put the entire thing back together. The hardest part was messing with screws that were 1/3 the size of the point of a pen. Then I took a dremel tool to the lens until it was almost completely gone, filled it with bondo, then painted the top of the bondo with blue paint to make it obvious that there wasn't a camera lens there. I took it to our security people and they were impressed with the job. I have seen the 3GS and it looks very similar, but I haven't seen a 4G yet to see what they look like. It goes in somehow when they build it, so it has to come out somehow, too.

Just found a place that will remove the cameras off of an iphone for $20. That makes me quite confident that I should be able to do it myself. I mean sheesh, I'm an electrician for the reactors on carriers and subs for christ sake. I should be able to figure that out.

To be honest, she sounded like a kid, and most places are starving for business out here. I will call tomorrow to check again. Engadget reported that it will be on sale until the 11th.

I'm due an upgrade and would love to get some cash back on my 3G, but I don't think I want to subject myself to another 2 years of AT&T. The service is pretty weak to say the least.

I'm hoping for a verizon iPhone announcement after the new year. What to do??

Real world experience: I have an 8gb 3G and my wife has a 16gb 4. Her phone feels like a brand new computer vs. my 1999 Dell running Windows 3.1 on 9600 baud dialup.

The 3GS gives you most of the juice of the 4, and is probably the better deal for you if you'll be removing the cameras. The big advantage of the 4 is the hi res main camera and the front camera for omghi2u Facetime chats. The higher res screen is really nice too, but I wish they had gone to a 4" screen instead.

The 3GS is probably a more durable as well - the plastic clamshell back is a lot more robust than the glass back of the 4. My wife's phone has Zagg skins on both sides and a chunky silicone case. So far so good.

I may try to do this tomorrow.

Another thing to keep in mind - the processor core behind the 3GS/4G is also ~40% more efficient per clock than the one found in the 3G. CPU performance boost is higher than the MHz indicate
