Default Need help ASAP with smoking engine problem! PLEASE HELP!

Ok, so here's the story:

Two days ago, I bought a Cobb AP V1 off of a member on this site. So, I figured that I wanted to run the Cobb stage 2 map until I get some money to get the AP tuned. Well, from a good bit of people on this site, I've heard not to run stage 2 without whether having a catless up pipe, or gutting your stock up pipe. So, me being a cheap-o, I gutted my stock up pipe.

I'm almost POSITIVE that I got every little piece of that cat out of the up pipe, and when I put it back together, it started fine and everything, and I actually couldn't believe it, as I was actually thinking to myself that I would have left a chunk of the cat in the up pipe, which would have went into my turbo and broke it, but like I said, surprisingly it all went well.

So, I go to get cigarettes at a gas station, and to see if I felt a difference with the gutted up pipe, I got on it a little bit. When I got to the gas station, the engine was smoking a lot, and the temperature guage was basically the whole way up to the H for hot. I noticed that I was super low on coolant, so I bought some from the gas station and put it in, and put it in, and put it in some more, to fill the lines back up.

Well, that solved the temperature guage problem, but my engine was still smoking when I got home. I looked to see where it was smoking from, and it looked like it was coming from underneath the turbo. I smelled it, and it smelled like burning metal, mixed with burning coolant.

I figured it smelled like burning coolant because me, being a noob, when I took the turbo off to take the up pipe out, when I unhooked the coolant lines into the turbo, coolant was spurting out everywhere. I held my thumb over the coolant line until I THOUGHT it stopped leaking, and it was getting late, so I dropped the coolant line to the turbo and let it sit overnight.

Apparently coolant was dripping all night long, all over the pipes. Today is actually the day that I put the car all back together from when I gutted the up pipe.

Now, when I gutted the up pipe, I put the EGT back in the pipe, which I don't know if I was supposed to do that, or if I was just to plug the hole up and take the EGT out.

I also noticed that on my firewall, straight back from the turbo, that there was coolant splashes all over the place, but not too much of it.

So, here are my questions to you subi gods out there:

1) Was I supposed to keep the EGT in, or was I supposed to plug it since I gutted the up pipe?

2) Why is it smoking under my turbo, and why does it smell like I mentioned above?

3) Is it my turbo that's smelling like this?

4) Did I do something wrong?

5) Why do you think my engine is smoking at all, and why just from that specific place?

Thanks in advance and PLEASE help me out. I'm scared because I love my Subi to death.

- DJ

check the coolant lines to the turbo - sounds like you broke / pulled something off when you r+r'd the uppipe

^^ This
one other question did you remove the turbo completely or did you remove the oil line?

so sounds like its just coolant burning off that will take about a day to 3 days of running it at opperating temp for atleast 2 hours or more each day especially for the amount and places that it could have gotten.

So see how it goes for the next few days.

Doesnt sound like you blew your turbo or youd notice that.

I removed every line off of the turbo to get it off, although I didn't literally pick the turbo up out of the car, I just set it to the side to get the up pipe out.

Also, would it have anything to do with the EGT? And should the EGT still even be there since I gutted it?

And what is r+r'd?

refitting the EGT shouldn't cause any immediate problem - it's usually recommended to leave it out (put a bolt in the hole - do the 2.2k ohm resistor mod in the harness) because the probe *may* break up and get sucked into the turbo some time down the line

r+r = remove and refit

I figured that's what it meant. I have no idea what the 2.2k ohm resistor is nor do I know how to do it obviously. I wish I would have never did this now..

Any more suggestions? And here's an update for everyone:

I just went out and checked the turbo. I didn't really see any wet lines coming off of the turbo, so my thoughts are that it can't really be any of the coolant lines on the turbo, because wouldn't they be wet if they were leaking?

And another question:

With everything I described above, is it ok to drive it to work tomorrow? It's about a 15 minute drive there and a 15 minute drive back.

Thanks!

in that case it was probably just the spilled coolant burning off (a little amount can make a surprisingly large amount of smoke)

if so it should be safe to drive but keep an eye on it - watch your temp gauge - since you let the coolant run low you *may* have problems with air and need to 'burp' the cooling system

check the stickies --> Unabomber's Manifesto --> Uppipe FAQ for details on the EGT 'fix' resistor - or search - it comes up a lot

Just plug the egt hole, go to radio shack and ask for the ohm resister and you will know what to do with it.. You might have a leak, did you buy new gaskets?

I did buy new gaskets, straight from the Subaru dealership. I'm just not understanding any of this. I just went outside to check everything again and the coolant tank was almost empty again. Maybe it's becuase I was low before that the lines had none in them so they had to fill up?

I would do a pressure test on the coolant system just to be safe. It probably would not hurt to get some cleaner and clean the engine off then take carboard or some thing clean that you can stick under the car and run it to see if any thing else is leaking

Dude. Chill. You just spilt coolant. I do it everytime I change a turbo. Lost 4 liters last time, just refill the top resivoir till it stays at a normal level. Is the smoke sweet at all?

If you mean sweet smelling, then kind of, and kind of not. It has that burning coolant smell, but it has a more pungent burning metal smell. And I hope you're right, I hope that's all I did..
