Default Lexus cancels next-gen SC, Toyota cancels next Avalon

Quote:
Sales of the bulbous Lexus SC 430, one of the vehicles that kick-started the current hardtop convertible fad in the U.S., have slowed so significantly that Toyota's luxury brand has reportedly canceled its replacement. The four-place, V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive vehicle never fit well into any specific niche, as it boasted neither the sportiness of the ragtop Jaguar XK and Porsche 911, nor the snob appeal of the BMW 6 Series.

Through the first six months of this year, Lexus sold only 1,230 SC's, down 40% from last year. What fans the Lexus sport coupes/convertible does have need not worry, however, as the brand will be launching the much more potent (and substantially more impressive) LF-A supercar at some point in the future.

According to Inside Line, the SC isnt the only Toyota product without a future. The Avalon entry-level Buick luxury sedan is also on the chopping block. Fans of the boring unpretentious Avalon can instead look forward to an extended-length version of the Camry sedan to take its spot in Toyota's U.S. lineup.

With development of the next-generation 2012 Camry well underway, Toyota also is studying whether to cancel the planned replacement for the Camry-based Avalon, which currently is slated to go into production in Kentucky in early 2010.

In its place, Toyota may opt to produce a long-wheelbase Camry for such markets as North America and the Middle East. The redesigned Camry currently is slated to begin production in mid-2011.

So the Avalon which is based on the (old) Camry may be replaced with a "long wheelbase" version of the new Camry... how is this news?

The problem with the SC430 is that the car simply wasn't competitive with other offerings in the luxury convertible segment for the past several years, especialy not for the price. The car desperately needed an update, not to get axed. Sucks to see it go though.

The SC was one of the most hideous cars on the road. Glad to see it go... and I think Lexus might just be making more room in it's lineup for that eventual supercar that should be coming out in the next couple of years.

No surprise with the Avalon news... a long wheelbase Camry makes perfect sense. I would be willing to bet that unlike most automakers, Toyota will make this long wheelbase Camry have unique sheetmetal and a unique interior... so basically it would still be a unique model, just cheaper to build since it would share most mechanical components with the next-gen Camry.

Dear Toyota,

Bring the Crown Majesta to the States to replace the Avalon instead of a hideously long Camry.

Thank you,

Tragedy.

The SC430 wasn't sporty in any way, obviously, they can't compete with the 911 and 6 series

Hmmm, does this mean my '92 SC400 will become more valuable? Kidding obviously...

Tryin to compete with a niche market... Attempting to bust into Mercedes territory with a Toyota isn't the best tactic.

People forget the SC sold awesome in the beginning, my local dealer had a 6 month wait. But no significant changes lead to slow sales.

This is what I was thinking when I clicked on this thread. I liked the oldskool SC... with the new one, I always wished they had either gotten rid of those rear "seats" completely and just made it a true 2-seater.

Is that RWD? Doesn't the Crown come w/ some big honking engines too?

The V6 camry probably cannibalizes sales of the Avalon considering the price difference and the fact that there isn't a ton more luxury in the Avalon compared to the V6 camry. The Avalon was also saddled w/ a 5AT the first year the Camry had the 6AT. I've had the 5AT, 2GR Avalon as a pool car, and I must say, it really did impress me for a massive FWD boat. Tons of power, returned 29mpg in interstate driving (not taking it easy, either), and it was very, very comfortable. Compared to the Buicks that I've driven as rentals, there is no reason to even consider those devil cars.

I'm wondering how they'll handle this long wheelbase Camry as far as styling and options. 4cyl available? Hybrid? Different sheetmetal?

a 1992 toyota TERCEL is probably worth more than your SC400 today due to fuel consumption.
