6.5 tyres on 7" rims?
Asking for a friend.. is it ok to put 6.5" wide tyres on 7" rims, or will they break off the bead too easily?
Cheers.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. However another friend told me that the tyre manufacturers have tolerances for their tyres, and a range of acceptable rim sizes they'll fit. He told me to go to the manufacturers web site and look up the specs on the tyre in question.. I haven't done this yet cuz I'm a lazy git!

A thinner tire would mean less grip.
but it seems to be a new fad (well to me anyways) to put thinner tires on really wide rims. So that the tire beads stretch out beyond the width of the tire tread. I've seen this mostly on wannabe drift cars. like this. ^ I don't understand the benefits of this? Last edited by GC84ever; 05-13-2006 at 10:02 PM. |

^ Wow.. that looks really odd! No, my friend isn't a wannabe drifter, just looking to upgrade from steelies with covers to nice shiney alloy rims without upgrading the tyres (sorry, tires) too.

If you are talking about using your stock 205/55/16 RE92's which are on a 6.5" wide rim, and using them on a 7" wide alloy you should be ok. Bridgestone's recommended rim width for that model and size is 5.5" - 7.5". Check the link below for the info.

Just go to tirerack.com and look up the specific tire you have......check the "Specs" link and see what the rim sizes recommended are for that tire.
