Intake & ECU Tuning
i just purchased the Weapon R Secret weapon intake for my 96 impreza 2.2L..ive read that aftermarket parts will not work correctly if the stock ECU is not tuned or modified.. Is there anything i must do to my ECU in my car so it will perform at its best when i install this intake pipe........lastly i have a catback exhaust on my car, does that need ECU tuning??

A tune never hurts, but you don't necessarily need one for an intake and/or cbe. Just do an ecu reset after you install the intake

It's always best to tune after a mod. Resetting the ECU won't do anything beneficial. Unfortunately, pre-05 Imprezas can't be open sourced tuned. You would need a piggyback or other type of engine management.

the safest thing is to use a scan gauge or other OBD monitoring equipment and chk on your fuel trims after a cpl hundred miles. if they are way out of whack, like +/- more than 7% on the highest load range then you will be pretty far off target AFR's in openloop.

I'm beginning some research on ECUs. Mostly I'm wallowing in a bunch of this is good/that is bad and tuning jargon. Currently I have a full exhaust (Borla headers, Random Tech single cat, Borla muffler) and a Cobb/PRM intake is on its way. I'd really like to have the best tune to take advantage of these mods. And maybe to get rid of my omnipresent "ill performing cat" CEL.

Tuning is important. Although I do not have experience with the 2.2L, I did toy around with the intake and a couple ECU tunes, and I found that the power can be rather sensitive to intake + ECU tune. I found stock to be the better option if you don't touch the ECU. It's just that you cause more problems than you solve with an intake and no ECU tune to optimize it. Again, I don't know how the 2.2L setup performs, so even on a stock ECU you might see gains with an intake. My best suggestion is to datalog the changes if you can to verify any gains and losses experienced to the modification. This is something you should do for every mod you attempt. The butt dyno is pretty bad about feeling raw power. It's only good about feeling the power band shape. The downside is that if you lose low end torque, the car will feel faster because you feel that gain effect on the top end. There's no real gain on the top end, but you get that sense. Now you're out low end torque and think the car's faster. Data logging can show you the real answers. I have over a hundred logs of my own car logging the various little upgrades I've done. Some of these have been me toying with my intake.
All I can suggestion is that you mod with caution. A lot of what you may do may or may not make power at all and even if so, it may not be as much or in the right areas you seek. |

I have never used a Weapon R intake but the biggest potential issue IMHO is going to be the diameter of the intake tubing. I switched up to a 3" short ram a couple years ago without a tune and almost immediately started seeing nasty lean conditions. I switched back to a hybrid style which is common on GD 2.5 N/A cars. If it is 2.5" tubing, I would think that you would be more-or-less OK without a tune but I would definitely log it and check your fuel trims to be safe.
